Tucker now 3-3 in tonight’s game so far. Goodnight all.

Meanwhile as the Astros lose 1-0 on a 2-hitter by the KC pitching staff, Tucker is 2-2 so far tonight at Fresno and 24-46 over his last 11 games including tonight’s game. No threat of him qualifying for Super Two. Time to bring him up. I wouldn't be averse to that. We're 17th in team OPS in CF and 18th in LFHow’s that possible with Springer as our CF? He hasn’t struggled that badly unless it’s all being dragged down by Marisnick.

I predict he will be in Houston no later than next Wednesday. He should be here now.

I predict he will be in Houston no later than next Wednesday. Why then? Fresno plays in El Paso Monday-Wednesday while Astros are at home. When they promoted Straw recently from Corpus to Fresno Fresno was starting a series in Round Rock so Straw didn’t have far to go. I’m thinking maybe they send Tucker from El Paso to Houston to join the Astros before they hit the road. Just a hunch.

Hinch needs to stop with the excuses for a lack of offense at home. There is no excuse for a team this good hammering the ball on the road and then coming home and looking like crap the way they have most of the season. It has to be either psychological or their off-the-field activities are responsible. The fans pack the park to see their team play and this is the kind of crap they get for their money!!!! having a two-hit shutout thrown at them by a 22-52 team on a 9-game losing streak......We hammered them in KC and hammered Duffy. Hell, the Rangers even go in there and sweep them. Then, they come to Houston and we hand them the game without even putting up a fight. A disgrace.

Baseball's a hard game. I like that Baggy reminded everyone that a few times this evening. It's even harder to do a repeat which hasn't been done in 18 years I'm surprised people are this frustrated. It was kind of a trap game. We've been playing very well, but guys were a little sluggish after a day off. And if Bregman didn't get robbed, maybe we still manage to eek one out. Can't win all of them. Three reasons for frustration: 1. Rally-killing GIDP’s (coupled with stagnant baserunning). 2. The strength of the opponent. 3. Another loss with 7 walks.

Kemp made no attempt to bunt , then, hits ground ball to second and Gattis is thrown out at third..double play follows and another scoring chance wasted because Hinch refuses to use the bunt. He won't bunt or use the hit and run. A couple of reasons why we lead the league in GIDP's.

So I take a morning shift and leave the game to you guys, and this is what you do to me???

Looking at the game summary, I'm confused what happened in White's AB in the 7th inning.
It says there were men on 1st and 2nd with one out. White hits into a "fielder's choice" but everyone is safe.
With the bases loaded and one out, Springer GIDP to end the inning.
Why wouldn't White's grounder to third be considered an infield hit, assuming Moose didn't make an error?

Like I’ve said before, they like to be aggressive on the basepaths, but for some reason they welcome DP’s with open arms. Springer, as usual, is back on the decline of the rollercoaster. Correa is back on defense mode at the plate and taking pitches to crush. Gattis and Gurriel are hitting choppers again. I have no problem with relying on these guys to not GIDP, but when they are, it’s time to shift gears. Sometimes, you’ve got to force the action. Two hits and no runs in nine innings against that shell of a World Series team is beyond excuses regardless of what Giles did.

It's one reason I prefer White starting at 1B vs LHP. He elevates the ball better than Gurriel, so even if he flies out, it won't be a DP. He also tends to fly out fairly deep, so if there is a man at 3B it can be an RBI.
Gurriel should start vs RHP. White and Gurriel are the perfect platoon so Hinch should take advantage while he can.

One GIDP per game is normal; two is above average but doesn't usually cost the team a win. Three and over, and it's likely a loss. The team needs to talk about what they are going to do about this.

Because the 3rd baseman had time to throw out the runner at 1st. Moustakas hesitated as he lookd over his shoulder to try and tag Marwin going to third but son realized Marwin was not close enough to him for the tag. By the time he fixated back to first the runner was safe.
Instead of calling it an error they called it a fielder's choice because if nobody was on base then he would have immediately thrown to first for the out.

By the way. JD Davis pitched almost 2 innings of relief last year for the Astros with only 1 hit and 3 ks (0.00 ERA). We should be using him in tie games over Giles

I wouldn't be averse to that. We're 17th in team OPS in CF and 18th in LF I hope they don’t pull the “must wait until he goes through adversity” nonsense with Tucker before they bring him up like the did with Bregman. Bregman batted almost .400 at AAA with hits in 14 of his first 15 games at Fresno. Then he went hitless (0-11) in games 16-18 and they called him up. That slump continued for his first 10 games in Houston in which he went something like 2-38 before he broke out and started hitting again. I thought that was a chicken shit way to do the kid. It's safe to say the front office hit rock bottom in 2016

in all fairness to Hinch, I don't really trust anyone in our pen in the 9th when it's 0-0. I would've put in Sipp just cause my gut would've been to go against my gut I didn't see the bullpen during the 8th, but I would imagine Hinch expected to scratch out a run in the 8th and go with Giles with a small lead. And it almost happened. In a tie game going into the 9yh or extra, I think I would go with McHugh if he's rested. I wish we could move McHugh to an everyday short-inning role in close games .. I just don't think it's realistic to. He deserves an All-Star nod though

Thanks for filling me in. Although, sounds like an error to me if Moose had the opportunity to get an out but failed to do so. He's supposed to be thinking through that scenario before the ball is ever hit. My (apparently faulty) understanding of a fielder's choice is that you reach base on a batted ball that causes one of your teammates to be thrown or tagged out. In this case, no outs were made, so normally I'd think the only two scoring options would be 'infield hit' or 'reached on error'.

It's an error in judgement if he could have thrown to first and didn't unless he gets an out at another base. Unless, that is, he couldn't have recorded an out anyway with a typical throw to first which would make it a hit.

I found the relevant rule. Looks like an out isn't required for a fielder's choice.
"MLB rule 10.05:
(b) The official scorer shall not credit a base hit when a: (1) runner is forced out by a batted ball, or would have been forced out except for a fielding error; (2) batter apparently hits safely and a runner who is forced to advance by reason of the batter becoming a runner fails to touch the first base to which such runner is advancing and is called out on appeal. The official scorer shall charge the batter with a time at bat but no hit; (3) pitcher, the catcher or any infielder handles a batted ball and puts out a preceding runner who is attempting to advance one base or to return to his original base, or would have put out such runner with ordinary effort except for a fielding error. The official scorer shall charge the batter with a time at bat but no hit; (4) fielder fails in an attempt to put out a preceding runner and, in the scorer's judgment, the batter-runner could have been put out at first base; or Rule 10.05(b) Comment: Rule 10.05(b) shall not apply if the fielder merely looks toward or feints toward another base before attempting to make the putout at first base. (5) runner is called out for interference with a fielder attempting to field a batted ball, unless in the scorer's judgment the batter-runner would have been safe had the interference not occurred."
Although, I dislike it when a hitter has his batting average reduced based on what an umpire surmises would have happened in some hypothetical situation like 'had the third baseman thrown to first', because in reality, no one knows what would have happened. Maybe White would have beaten the throw. Maybe the throw would have drawn the first baseman off the bag. Who knows. All we know for sure is that White put the ball in play, and everyone was safe.
