I was looking at mlbtr for a likely cost on acquiring Herrera. Most people seem to think (not that they really know what's going on of course) that the Royals GM will try to get a back-end MLB Top 100 prospect, which for the Astros would be someone like Yordan Alvarez. Personally, I think 6 years of Alvarez is too much to pay for 4 months of Herrera since Alvarez stands to be a key part of the OF or maybe a first baseman after Yuli is done with the team.
The Royals are a team that has a lot of high-ceiling players in the lower minors, teenagers mainly, who look to be MLB ready around 2022. When seeking a return for Herrera, they could target guys like AJ Reed, Tyler White, or Tony Kemp who can keep their team respectable over the next 3-4 years. Or, and I think this is more likely, they could target more players in the A to A+ levels of the minors who would project to form a highly competitive team starting around 2022.
Beyond Alvarez, the Astros have Freudis Nova, Jorge Alcala, Cionel Perez, David Paulino, Corbin Martin, and Hector Perez as Top 10 team prospects who are not on the Untouchables List along with Whitley and a few others.
If I were Luhnow, I'd offer the Royals two options for Herrera:
A) A Play-Now package consisting of any two of the following: Ferguson, Kemp, Reed, Mayfield, Kemmer, McCurry, Guduan, Hoyt, Sneed
B) A Play-Later one-for-one trade in which Herrera comes to the Astros in exchange for Nova, Alcala, Martin, or H Perez.
The Royals' biggest weaknesses currently are 1B, OF, SS, and DH. Most of the players in Option A would be clear improvements over the current Royals roster, ready to plug and play from Summer 2018 until the new crop matures around 2022.
Option B could be a good choice for KCR if they want to tank during 2018-2020, piling up high draft picks, and using the guy they from the Astros to bolster their 2022-2025 teams which project to be playoff contenders.

According to mlb.com, Starling Marte might be up for trade by the Pirates. Under contract this year and next, he's got a career 115 OPS+ and riding at around 135 this year. Would replace Marisnick presumably. 29 years old and experienced enough to not crack under pressure the way I'm afraid Tucker might in the playoffs.
Marte is fast, too: He's on pace to steal about 28 bases this year, and he stole 47 as recently as the 2016 season. In other words, the Astros wouldn't lose speed by giving up Marisnick in favor of Marte.

Marte would be a great addition. If they can get Reddick healthy, we'd be looking at this potential lineup:
Springer CF Bregman 3B Altuve 2B Correa SS Marte LF Gattis DH Stassi C Reddick RF Gurriel 1B
Throw in a good reliever addition and we're all set.

What makes you so sold on Marte? He is an underachiever and once had been issued an 80-game drug suspension.
Edit: My bad. The underachiever was Gregory Polanco. My point about the suspension stands.

If Luhnow acquires a pitcher six months removed from surgery, it'd be a first

thing is though .. not pursuing Britton means we're probably pursuing Hand. And I have plenty of concerns he's a pulled something waiting to happen with all the mileage the Padres have put on his arm

This is just outlandish speculation. I do NOT expect this to happen.
But think about the possibility that the Angels might need to reduce payroll and rebuild with lower payroll. They will probably be out of the running shortly for the diviisonas they chase three different teams. Pujols is probably not a tradable commodity at his salary. But Trout is on the books for the next two years at 33 1/3 million per year. Would you bust the budget and take a severe hit on the farm to add him to the lineup for two and a half years?
Possible lineup
1. Springer CF/LF 2. Bregman 3B 3. Altuve 2B 4. Trout CF/LF 5. Correa SS 6. Gattis DH 7. Reddick RF 8. Gurriel 1B 9. McCann/Stassi C

Yep. You always take the best player in a generation when he's offered.

I figured if they did consider trading Trout to reduce payroll, he would be packaged with Pujols to provide even more relief.

Any GM of a contender who wouldn’t sell his soul to add Mike Trout to his baseball team should be fired on the spot.

Some speculation this week as to whether the Mets will tear things down and try to rebuild, which could make DeGrom and Syndergaard available. It's not simply a question of whether the Astros should target one of those pitchers; it's whether a competitor like NYY or BOS picks them up and what the consequences of that would be.
