Blue Jays web site has announced that Giles has been named closer......
Guess him getting shelled at Fresno was a figment of our imagination.

Bregman would've scored the 6th run there if Yuli had hit a grounder

Anyone want to wager whether Marwin goes Full Mendzoan by season's end?

With the acquisitions of bullpen help I really like our pitching from start to finish now. Sipp, Rondon, McHugh and Smith have been very solid for us. Devo will right himself and once he does we have a bullpen that can close out games. We need to get rid of Will. Wished we shipped him off with Giles, but I guess it doesn't hurt to have a gas can when the score is lopsided.
Presley should be an upgrade over Will and I'm interested to see how Osuna closes out games (or sets up for the 8th if they prefer Rondon for the time being)

Losing streak sent to hell where it belongs. Let's hope that's the last one for the season.

if Hinch stays with this late-inning combo from tonight when protecting a 1-run lead, I think he'd find he'd find success with it

Mix and match Smith and Sipp when needed.

Coming off a suspension, would Osuna be likely to pitch a few innings at AAA before joining the Astros?

Blue Jays manager on Giles (from mlb.com):
When Gibbons was asked about Giles he quickly made light of his own past disagreements with players. During Gibbons' first tenure as manager for Toronto he had run-ins with Shea Hillenbrand and Ted Lilly.
"I've had my own issues with players in the past so it's not like it's going to be [an issue]," Gibbons said before breaking into laughter. "I don't know what happened down there, but we've had a lot of guys who have really come into their own once they've come to this team. Hopefully that happens here. It'll be a new start for him too, which I'm sure he needs."

Great start by Morton and then the pen shut them out...........Smith, Sipp, McHugh, amd Rondon. Hinch managed the pen perfectly and kept Harris and Devenski out of the game which was a plus. If Osuna comes in and does shat they got him to do we can have a good 6-9 combination with McHugh, Rondon and Osuna closing it out.
Don't anybody tell Saint I said this but, I would keep White when Altuve comes off the DL and send Davis back. It will be interesting to see out of White, Tucker, and Davis gets to stay when Correa comes back. No way would I send Kemp back down. My preference right now would be for Davis to go.
This was a big win. I wish we had hit better with RISP,but, we did enough to win.

I wonder what Gibbons will say when Giles punches himself in the face after he gets hammered.

This was a big win. I wish we had hit better with RISP,but, we did enough to win. Very interesting defensive stats on Astros first basemen this season. By RZR (Revised Zone rating), White looks to be the best of the bunch at 1B while Davis looks to be the worst. Definition of RZR from Fangraphs: "RZR measures a player’s range, taking three things into account: the amount of Balls In Zone (BIZ) a player receives, a player’s total Plays Made, and a player’s total amount of Out Of Zone Plays Made (OOZ). It is, essentially, a simplified version of UZR." White .909 RZR Gurriel .843 Marwin .824 Davis .786 Now, with more playing time the order of players on that list could easily change. However it's interesting that White has only committed one error over 184 innings at 1B this year, and that error came in a Grizzlies game. It's quite an improvement over last year, when White averaged 1 error for every 40 innings played at 1B. Earlier today I mistakenly said that White had no errors at 1B this year. I thought I had read that somewhere but I looked it up on B-Ref and there it was, an error at AAA this year.

In terms of who gets sent down when Correa returns, the team must keep in mind that Davis spent most of last year with the Hooks. He did well there last year, and has hit well in the PCL this year, but he's never really gotten it together at the big league level.
Davis probably improves fastest by getting to play every day at AAA in August, and then returning to the Astros in September.
