I think we're seeing our top-5 take shape in the lineup when Springer gets back. Tyler White is now showing that he belongs to stay with the Astros and not go back to Fresno. He needs to be the DH, but, I fully expect Hinch to keep running Gattis out there once in awhile. White could also play first if Gurriel doesn't hit. By the first of September, we could have McCann and Marisnick back and have a full, healthy roster. They probably bring Tucker and Perez back, too. White has definitely earned his spot in the lineup. I’m going to say it now: have White as the full-time DH and find someplace to put Gattis in the meantime. Having power can only get you so far if you’re not consistent.

....and now for the post-game wrapup.Take it away Corch! ”If Carlos would’ve gotten off of Daniella, he’d’ve gotten a damn hit today!” If he had stayed off a little more, he probably wouldn't have missed 6 weeks. Three hits last night and back to the slow bat again today, He usually hits iin Anaheim so that would be a good place to break out

I am pretty sure that Springer and Correa can get their ops back over 800 with a nice little run in September. If everyone else can keep up their pace then that would give us a line up of
Springer CF 800+ Bregman 3rd 900+ Altuve 2nd 850+ Correa SS 800+ White DH 900+ Here we have a hole for the right fielder Here we have a hole for the 1st baseman catcher 700 Kemp LF 800+
We can hang with anyone with that lineup if we fill both of those holes

....and now for the post-game wrapup.Take it away Corch! I exhaled when White hit the home run in the 9th.....Rondon and Osuna can alternate between setup and closer. Only negattive today was Morton falling apart again and Hinch keeping him in too long. Why Morton consistenly dominates and then loses it all at once is a mystery. It looks like he loses his ability to locate pitches and he gets hammered. Smith was shaky but Rondon and Osuna did a good job of closing the game. Another three hit game for Maldonado who has been great at the plate on the road trip. Our defense is a LOt better with Altuve back at second base.

In retrospect, Morton only had about 75 quality pitches in the tank today.
Prior to this, he's tended to fall apart between 85 and 90 pitches.
It might be a good idea to limit him to about 80 pitches for the rest of the regular season and make sure he doesn't blow his arm out by October.

I was hoping we would get to September with a good cushion in the division race, allowing Luhnow to call up some of our better pitching prospects to give them some work at the ML level and give our SPs some rest heading into the playoffs. So much for that idea, I guess.

White is with Houston thru 2022. Yep, it would be silly to trade him for an impact player who only has a few months to a year left on his contract. Pretty soon we may see White getting the IBB treatment. For a 33rd round draft pick, the Astros have gotten a lot of value out of White.

Mariners are now 5 1/2 behind Houston. Four and a half behind Oakland. Might be tough for them to pass both teams and win the division with only 34 games left.

White's been impressive, but I still like to see what he does over the course of a full season. Every major leaguer is going to slump, and White still has to show me the ability to adjust to that. Which he didn't do in 2016. That being said, he's got some small shoes to fill on that front considering Gattis

These are the overall batting totals for Astros hitters if we combine the 2017 and 2018 seasons together. While White struggled for most of 2016, by Aug/Sept he hit for quite a bit above the AL average. The metric used is wOBA (weighted On Base Average -- a kind of super-OPS). That's just shy of 200 PAs for White over the two seasons, so as Bear says, it's not entirely convincing... but one thing in White's favor is his relatively clean injury history. He's not missed much time from any level of professional ball due to injury, so if that holds up, he may well be able to grind through an entire season and the 600+ plate appearances that would entail. At his current HR rate, White projects for something ridiculous like 50 HRs over a full season of ~650 PAs. If you asked me in the offseason how many homers he'd hit this year, I'd have said 25. But the way he's hitting now, I think 30 is an achievable target for 2019.

So much for that idea, I guess. I don't think we should give up on that idea. I think all of the starters need a game or two off. We need them rested more than the bullpen. Maybe go with a few more "bullpen" starts like we did yesterday. It's time the offense carried the starters a little (like they did today).

I think we can say White's power is legit. Not Stanton-caliber, but 30 HR is certainly possible.
Can he maintain the high OBP and AVG? He's due to see some shifts the way he pulls the ball too. Will he adjust?

I think we can say White's power is legit. Not Stanton-caliber, but 30 HR is certainly possible. Can he maintain the high OBP and AVG? He's due to see some shifts the way he pulls the ball too. Will he adjust? Currently, White leads the team in Hard Contact percentage at 40.4% of all batted balls qualifying for 'hard contact'. Part of the result of that is that over 30% of all fly balls he has hit, have gone over the fence. He's also second on the team in average exit velocity at over 90mph. Derek Fisher, in his limited PAs, actually has the highest average exit velo and that attests to his strength... but of course he hasn't really put it all together at the plate yet. The exit velo thing really only helps if you actually hit the ball when you swing, and unfortunately Fisher is right up there with Marisnick in terms of whiff%. I would estimate an OBP around .370 and AVG around .280 for White next year. He's running a little hot right now with a .344 BABIP and while a certain amount of that is good luck, it's also a reflection of the exit velo and hard contact... basically when you hit the ball hard enough, you will get more ground balls past the infielders or get fly balls to sail over the outfielders' heads. A BABIP of .320 is probably sustainable for White next year. In 2016, he had a big hole in his swing insofar as he his stance didn't allow him to cover the outside edge of the plate well. He ended up taking a lot of called strikes there, whiffing at pitches he couldn't really reach, and grounding out on weak contact when he leaned over the plate Altuve-style. In the summer that year he was back in Fresno addressing that vulnerability. The result has been pretty good. White's main weakness now (shh... don't tell the Red Sox) is on strikes that are high and inside. Maybe, some pitchers will try to exploit that. But they have to be careful because if they miss their spot, Tyler can pull the ball down the 3B line pretty well. I expect to see Tyler hit more balls to the opposite field as the season goes on. In Fresno this year, 30% of all the balls he put in play went to RF but in the majors it's down to 18%. Not sure if he has changed his approach at the plate, or it's just statistical noise based on a small sample size of PAs. Overall, if White were the full-time DH in 2019, I'd put him down for 125 wRC+ and and OPS around .850. It's not realistic to think he can keep his wRC+ in the 170s where it is now. But then again, he's a player who has proven his naysayers wrong pretty regularly over the past five years. Lord knows he could do it again...

White hitting cleanup today, which we have rarely seen. Hitting ahead of Marwin and Yuli. What a difference a season makes. I hope Hinch doesn't see one of them blow his nose or he will be a late scratch. Hey, Corch. Can Tyler White stay on the team now?
