I just figured it out. We needed a 1 run win to make up ground on Pythagoras. Evan Gattis is the reincarnation of Pythagoras.

With the emergence of Tyler White I doubt the Astros pursue resigning Gattis.

It will be interesting to see which of our free agents that the team makes an effort to sign. My thoughts are, Morton for sure, Elvis for sure, Keuchel most likely, Maldonado, Sipp and Gonzales likely at least until the price gets too high, Gattis and McCann nope. I do not see us as big players in the free agent market for anyone other than our own.

Astros will either re-sign Morton or Keuchel....both will at least get a QO...my guess Morton re-signs, and Keuchel does not take the QO....he signs elsewhere....please don't re-sign Sipp again...I am indifferent on Maldonado or McCann, if it is a 1 year bargain deal, why not....the others on the list can be replaced with younger, cheaper options from within.

I agree with you that Morton and Keuchel will get QOs. I also agree that Keuchel will decline his and Morton will accept his, if he doesn’t retire. I don’t think Marwin will get a QO and I don’t think he will be re-signed. I don’t think Sipp, Gattis or Maldonado will be re-signed. I don’t think the team will exercise the club option on either McCann or Harris. Don’t see the team being active in the FA market this offseason....with the possible exception of signing a catcher, since it seems that Stassi has been exiled. Plenty of ML ready talent in the minors to replace those players who won’t be back.

WE need to re-sign Morton and Maldonado. I wouldn't say re-signing Maldonado is a must...but getting some like him would be ideal....The future is Stassi and Stubbs (more so on Stubbs), so the Astros should just sign a veteran catcher to a 1 year deal, with a 2nd year club option.

I was thinking Stassi and Stubbs would be a good combo at catcher, but with Luhnow going out and getting Maldonado and then Stassi not getting any playing time now, it seems that for whatever reason Stassi is in the doghouse.

Could it be the fact that he went a month without touching a ball with his bat before he was benched (while his WAR continued to climb...lol)?

During the first half of the season, I was impressed with Stassi........not so since the break. Acquiring Maldonado was a smart move by Luhnow. I would like to keep Maldonado as an insurance policy in case Stubbs isn't ready. I don't Stassi will ever be much more than a backup.

Just because he doesn't post, doesn't mean he's not around. I can't believe a grown man is childish enough to leave because somebody picks on him. He has some good ideas ,but, for some reason, he can't stand it when the value he puts on WAR, OPS, etc. is not accepted as the final authority. He over-rated Stassi like I under-rated White.

My guess is Maldanado wants at least a 2 year deal. He just turned 32. Hope the Astros sign him. Stassi seems to have worn out as the year went on. Strikes out too much. McCann is probably gone.

I'd like to know if they think Stubbs will be ready by next year. At age 32, I don't think giving Maldonado a two-year deal would be a bad thing. McCann could be planning to retire. I won't be surprised if Hinch talks them into trying to keep Marwin.

If the Astros sign a FA this offseason, I’m thinking it will likely be a catcher. That catcher could be Maldanado. No way would any team pay McCann $15 million for one year...the club option figure... at this point in his career. McCann doesn’t hit or throw out runners anymore so any team that signs him would be signing him primarily for his leadership in the clubhouse and ability to handle a pitching staff. I think a return to Atlanta to finish out his career would be a good thing for him and for the Braves.

He seems to handle the pitchers well and is superior defensively to McCann and Stassi. His arm can shut down a running game and he could be a good tutor for Stubbs or Stassi.

Is there a limit on how many QOs one team can offer? I don’t think so. I suspect the only restriction in making QOs is strictly internal. If everyone accepts their QO, then we might have to pay a luxury tax. But that is allowed.
