Which minor league players do you find yourself tracking their stats the most? I guess Tucker and reinstated Whitley will be the headliners, forgone conclusions..... But for me it is Straw, Ferrell, Martin, Alvarez and Stubbs... Tucker, Josh James, Stubbs, Straw, Josh Rojas, Corbin Martin, Cionel Perez, JJ Matijevic...soon will be adding Whitley to that list. All of those guys I could see playing for Houston in the next 2-3 years. Another player that I am beginning to watch is the new kid at Quad Cities, Leovanny Rodriguez. Randy Cesar has been on the radar lately because of the 21 game hitting streak he has going, but looking down the road, I don’t believe he has a future with the Astros because he doesn’t have the best glove and he is a third baseman. His chances of ever playing for Houston are minimal.

Now that we actually have a good team to watch at MLB level, I spend more time following our competition and looking at potential trades and FAs. Back when we were a 100-loss team consistently it was more fun to look at the minors and dream about the future.

For whomever would you trade, sir? Doug makes a strong case for Herrera, but I mean, we already have a fastball/slider meathead jock closer.

For whomever would you trade, sir? Doug makes a strong case for Herrera, but I mean, we already have a fastball/slider meathead jock closer. I'd trade for Abreu to play 1B and DH, and then be ready to let Marwin go. Yuli can play 3B, DH, and 1B. Bregman can play 3B and backup SS. Kemp can play OF and backup 2B. Bullpen-wise, outside of the obvious like Briton or Herrera, I'd see if Jared Hughes from CIN is available and let Sipp go. Harris or Giles go if they don't improve. You have control of Hughes for cheap for two more years. You could also look at Barraclough from MIA or Nate Jones from CHI (maybe a big bundle with him and Abreu and knock it all out at once). Springer RF Altuve 2B Correa SS Abreu 1B Bregman 3B Gattis DH Stassi C Reddick LF Kemp CF Bench: Gurriel Davis McCann Gonzalez (or White) Rotation: Verlander Cole Keuchel Morton McCullers Bullpen: Devenski Rondon Smith Peacock McHugh Giles (or Trade) Harris (or Trade) I know we'r emostly complaining about the bullpen lately, but I feel like we're still lacking a proven RBI power guy in the middle of the order. Adding Abreu makes us just as scary offensively as the Yankees or Red Sox. I don't think we can continue to operate effectively without someone better than Yuli or Marwin at 1B.

Abreu, yes. As for replacing Sipp, I’m almost wanting to see if calling up Pérez would be a possibility. We still need a closer-type reliever, though.
I love Bregman to death, but I’m just not sure about keeping him at 3B. He does an admirable job, but slow grounders eat him alive, and sometimes grounders inexplicably pop out of his glove. He’s fantastic at decision making and has a good arm, but the range is lacking. I just wish the middle infield was available for him.
The problem with putting an actual 3B like Gurriel in Bregman’s position but having Abreu at 1B and Bregman in LF is you wonder if that really improves the defense overall.

This season the Astros have been thrown out running the bases 18 times not including caught stealing or pickoffs. I'm talking about getting thrown out stretching a double to a triple, tagging up on a fly ball but being thrown out at the next base, trying to advanced on a wild pitch... Bregman has been thrown out 5 times this way, a big portion of the Astros' 18 total baserunning outs. The Astros have been picked off at 1st 4 times this season and Bregman has been responsible for two of those. Additionally, he's been caught stealing in 3 of 9 attempts. That is a total of 10 outs Bregman has made running the bases, compared with only six successful steals. As one of the less experienced players on the team, it's to be expected that Bregman will make some mistakes like this. I just hope he is reflecting critically on why he keeps getting thrown out and makes the necessary changes.

Jon Kemmer looks like he is picking up steam and getting back to his 2015-2017 form. That's good to see. I've thought he could have trade value this year if he comes around. Like Kemp, he is one of those borderline potential major leaguers who may well stick if given the chance.

White, Kemmer, and De Oleo all with 3-hit games for Fresno today.
This De Oleo kid kind of came out of nowhere. What's up with him? .300 BA in limited PAs so far.

The blown saves are infectious. Fresno took an 11-8 lead in the top of the 10th and just gave up 3 runs on a couple homers in the bottom half. They’re headed to the 11th now.

Now is it time to start talking about him?

“2019 - Straw gets the call to the majors; by the end of 2020, Straw is leading off for the Astros?” - thomasj13 Don’t think so. Springer should be here through 2020. Reddick definitely should be gone in 2021. If I understand things correctly, the contract Springer signed a while back covers the 2018-2019 seasons after which he is due a final trip through arbitration for the 2020 season. If he doesn’t sign a contract extension that takes him beyond 2020, he becomes a free agent after the 2020 season. So..., beginning with the 2021 season we could be looking at an outfield of maybe Alvarez LF, Straw CF and Tucker RF. If that happens, I could see Straw leading off in 2021.
