From game played July 24:
AAA - Fresno 2 Iowa (Cubs) 1 Jake Marisnick RF: 1-4, BA .333 Derek Fisher DH: 1-2, BA .264....stole a base(6) Tyler White 2B: 1-4, BA .333 AJ Reed 1B: 0-3, BA .257 Jack Mayfield SS: 2-3, BA .274 Yordan Alvarez LF: 0-3, BA .196 Nick Tanielu 3B: 2-4, BA .246 Jamie Ritchie C: 0-4, BA .286 Myles Straw CF: 2-3, BA .298....stole a base(17)...threw a runner out at second...has now stolen 52 bases at AA and AAA combined. Hopefully he has broken out of his slump. He is 4-6 in his last two game and walked once. He hasn’t struck out in his last three games. Prior to the last three games he had struck out 13 times in 27 at bats in 6 games while walking only twice. Very unStrawlike slump. Josh James RHP: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 11 K, ERA 3.18....over his last 10 games he has 84 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched and posted a 2.95 ERA. Unfortunately he has also walked 25 batters. If he could improve his control, I think he could make a good closer. Riley Ferrell RHP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, ERA 4.82 Ken Giles RHP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, ERA 2.08 Brendan McCurry RHP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, ERA 3.70....over his last 10 games he has pitched 13.1 innings, allowed 2 earned runs on 10 hits while striking out 18 and walking just 3

Ken Giles has not been used in a save situation yet in AAA. I wonder if they are trying to get him used to pitching in the 7 or 8th innings and that is their intended use of him later on in the bigs.

(1) Screwing the pooch by flipping off the boss, (IMO) probably means he won't wear an Astros uniform again. (2) Being in non-save situations may be a more relaxed way for him to build up some decent stats for trade value. (3) or... Being left off in closer role may be punitive actions for his misdeeds.

I think that they make him stay down for 30 more days or so and apologize to AJ and bring him back. Then if does it again then you DFA and see if anyone bites. Right now you could not get a bag of oranages for him and Luhnow does not throw away potential value.

DFA his ass already. What, is he a child who needs to sit in timeout to think about what he’s done?

I looked up Fresno and saw that Straw had a line of 2111 and thought hey maybe he hit a home run, well no but his average is back over 300. It might sound funny but he might make the playoff roster for the Astros.

MLB must have come out with that update late yesterday or today. I just checked our top 30 yesterday and it was not the one posted today. I have been wondering why Beer was not ranked in our top 30. They recognized the big year Josh James is having. He jumped all the way up from #30 to #6. Corbin Martin moved up too. Brandon Bielak is new to the list. Stubbs moved back up a bit. I’m kinda surprised that Paulino is still on the list....Arauz too.

It is a shame he is going to be good. May pay off though if he can recapture what we had going on with McCann and the staff earlier this year.

OP.... Know this is more aligned to Trade thread, but was wanting your take on the Maldonado - Sandoval trade. Looking at his (Sandoval) stats, he seemed pretty mediocre until this year. Was this a fluke, or did we lose someone with some upside potential?

Was this a fluke, or did we lose someone with some upside potential? Sandoval just recently reeled of 42 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. I think the guy has some upside potential. I like what Maldonado brings to the team with his defense. He can shut the opposing teams running game down. Really tough to steal on him. Runners can’t afford to wonder off first with him behind the plate. I’ve seen him pick off runners at first on more than one occasion. I did hate to lose Sandoval though.

Whitley went on the DL July 9th for his Oblique strain, and Luhnow was quoted that he wouldn't be out for more than a couple of weeks. linkHe should due a start. Has anyone heard otherwise?
