CC has his issues, but if he's healthy he should be out there. The guy has been very good for us in the postseason. You're talking about an .860 OPS shortstop with 8 HRs in 32 games. Plus, as well as Bregman has done at shortstop, we're way better defensively with him back at 3B and CC at SS. His arm alone as a cutoff man makes a world of difference.

I wonder if there have ever been 5 100 win teams in the same season. Atlanta and the Twins should make it. More teams are tanking in order to get the high draft picks.

You are right.........Mariners, Tigers, and Orioles are gunning for the first pick. Unfortunately for us, the Yankees have three with the Tigers this week.

How crazy is it that Philadelphia stole Harper from the Nats yet trail them in the standings by 6 games for the Wild Card lead? Overall he is a slightly above-average 2B defensively even with the weak arm.

I wonder what kind of offers Kluber is going to be looking at after the season...

I wonder what kind of offers Kluber is going to be looking at after the season... I am more concerned about how much it will cost Crane if we want to keep Cole, who will be the most coveted of free agent pitchers. As for your ideas on Altuve's defense........he appears to be in a steady decline....more errors than ever before.

when he's healthy Steven Strasburg is one of the most valuable players the Nats have Rumor is that he is going to opt out this offseason. Well, I doubt he’s much cheaper than Cole. Might prefer to go for broke for Gerrit.

As for your ideas on Altuve's defense........he appears to be in a steady decline....more errors than ever before. If you care about the cost of Cole, you should care about the cost of the other FA pitchers. If they go for cheaper; he'll go for cheaper. He has had a couple additional dumb errors this season, but that's only a part of overall defensive value. The biggest hit to his normal overall elite-level value has been his baserunning this year. The lack of steals and lack of success with the few attempts he has had, plus some of the additional blunders have made him a below-average value baserunner this year. Some of that is for sure the recuperating from the knee surgery, but some of it is also trying to do too much. I go back and forth with being frustrated about Altuve, but we need to remember he was still having knee and leg issues before the all-star break. Even with those issues he was still a little better than average while playing hurt. Since he came back strong, he has been amazing. His 2nd half numbers: .341/.393/.632 1.026 OPS and leading the AL in Runs and Hits. He'd likely be an even better MVP candidate than Bregman this year if he had been healthy all season. And that says a lot considering Bregman would be the MVP this year if not for that guy named Trout.

Verlander's 2 year contract has the highest Average Annual Value after adjustments for deferred money and such. It has a AAV of $32M. If Cole wants to match Verlander's AAV, I'm game. If he has a magic number in mind like $200M, then it's simple algebra to come up with a seven year - $224M to run through his age 35 season. I'd love it if we kept both he and Verlander around if they continue to be effective.
To protect the Astros, perhaps set it up as $20M plus $1M for each start over 20 each year with only the first 5 years fully guaranteed.
Of course that's just a bare minimum framework with details to be ironed out.

Should Correa automatically be a shoe in for the playoff roster? He has not been healthy and may not have his timing down at the pate or in the field in the limited number of PA left in the season. I'm honestly thinking his place is not secure. I think it’s tine we toss Correa and his hoochie unceremoniously onto Crawford Street.

I hope we don't face Tampa in the playoffs. If they beat us (Morton), there are a few heads on here that would explode. I don't want to lose any fellow board members.

Garner of Minnesota is playing in only his 2nd full season in the league. Last year he had only 7 HRs in 302 ABs (102 games). This year he has 29 HRs in only 82 games (277 ABs).
In only his 2nd full season he would have been on pace to hit about 60 HRs this year. Not bad for a catcher.

I think that I have figured out how to keep Cole. First you have to trade Reddick, he has value with pretty good defense as I can recall at least 4 home runs that he has "stolen" this year and he can play all 3 positions well. So package him with a prospect and not ask for much in return. Then sign Cole to a deal that has an opt out in year 3 but also has a rather large roster bonus if he gives away that option. So the way that would work with the AAV issue is that it is the player who controls how things go and not the club. For instance let's assume that Cole wants to stay in Houston as long as Verlander and Greinke are here because that would give him the chance to win a World Series in three straight years, so he signs a deal that pays him 22 million a year for two years and a player option for 32 million a year for the next three years after that and that comes with a roster bonus of 20 million for year 3 should he decide to stay here. That way his cost against the cap would be 22 million for the next two years and 38.67 million for years 3, 4, and 5.
I know he wants to play in LA so this could be sold to him as not having to pay the California state income tax, high property tax, high property valuations, and the high cost of living. Factor it all in and Houston gives him 32 million in purchasing power for 32 million and LA gives him 25 million. LA would have to pay him 41 million a year to get the same purchasing power as Texas does for 32 million.
