Quad Cities won game one of their playoff series with Cedar Rapids 4-1 Quad Cities lost game two of their playoff series with Cedar Rapids 2-1. Quad Cities wasted a good start by Brett Daniels in their 2-1 game two loss. I am thinking maybe Brett Daniels might be a name to remember going forward. Daniels started game two and pitched 6.1 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 10. In his last 3 starts vs their playoff opponent Cedar Rapids he has pitched 19.1 innings, allowed 4 runs on 9 hits, walked 5 and struck out 30.

Round Rock lost game three to Iowa 3-2. Game four is tonight at 7:08. Cristian Javier will start for RR. that should be an interesting game. Looking forward to seeing Javier throw this spring. Bortaz said he read somewhere that the team was considering bringing up Kent Emanuel. After Framber’s latest showing, I would like to see Emanuel get a chance. He is another guy who, like Mayfield earlier, has been in our minor league system a long time without ever making his ML debut. He has had a good season and an outstanding second half of the season. Framber is just way too inconsistent.

Framber is just way too inconsistent. Emanuel is a guy that I really wanted us to take in the second round, when we passed I said no way he is there for the third and then he was. So I was glad we got him and then disappointed that he has not done any more than he has so far. Then by the end of April I was started thinking "why waste more time with this guy". So given the way he started the year he has sure figured something out it seems. He did and Rodgers did not.

The Carolina League had originally scheduled playoff games between Fayetteville (Astros) and Down East (Rangers) at Fayetteville on Wednesday the 4th and Thursday the 5th. With the hurricane possibly presenting issues later in the week, the league has decided that the team’s will play a doubleheader on Wednesday and be off on Thursday. Game 3 and games 4&5 (if necessary) are still scheduled for Friday - Sunday on the road at Down East. Fayetteville and Down East split the doubleheader today. Down East won game one 3-0. Fayetteville won game two 3-0. Pena had a home run for Fayetteville in game #2. Fayetteville and Down East did not play Friday. They are playing a doubleheader today. Fayetteville lost the first game 5-4 and now trail in the best-of-five series 2-1. Pena had another home run for Fayetteville in game 1.

I don’t understand why he has started walking so many batters this year. I can understand him giving up more hits at the higher levels of the minor leagues than he did at the lower levels, but the increase in walks is puzzling.

Fayetteville and Down East play the deciding game 5 of their playoff series at 2:00 CDT today. No SPs listed yet, but I’m guessing Shawn Dubin gets the start for Fayetteville. He last pitched on 9-2. In his last three starts Dubin has pitched a total of 18 innings, allowed no runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and 25 strikeouts. Two of those starts were against Down East. In those 2 starts he pitched a total of 11 innings, allowed no runs on 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 15.

Whitley has given up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks..., so far..., in the first inning. Iowa still batting with one out and runners on first and third. In defense of Whitley, the HP ump is really squeezing the pitchers.

Two more walks and a throwing error by Whitley in the second inning. Iowa leads 3-0 after 2.

Round Rock leading 7-4 after 4. Whitley pulled after 4. His line; 4 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 5 BB, 6 K. Again..., in defense of Whitley..., pitchers on both teams really getting squeezed by the HP ump. Ryan Hartman pitching in the 5th for Round Rock.

Ryan Hartman pitching in the 5th for Round Rock. Whitley got squeezed his last start as well. Those walks, squeezed or not, are a concern. Hopefully he starts to clean it up in the AFL. Getting stretched out and more innings in the can while staying healthy are just as important in my book. I still do not think he is up as a starter next year but who knows. I sure did not see him falling apart as bad as he did though.
