I guess his 2-4 w/2B&HR in game #1 was not the awakening. Could it be a mental thing with all the expectations , and the let down that he is not in the show. But with the signing of Brantley that could do it. Then again it is only April. I’d like to see one of the Round Rockers push Brantley to DH. They should tighten up some of the defense in the OF.

The two positions over the last couple seasons with what you might call a black hole LF and C.

A few years ago the pirates drafted this high school kid in the first round. He was very highly thought of and he quickly rose through the minors and the ranks of outfield prospects until a couple of years ago he was rated as the highest rated outfield prospect in all of baseball by some. Then he went into a rather prolonged slump of over a year. His star faded and people talked about how his swing was too long and too slow. Soon the Pirates got tired of waiting for him and traded him to the Rays. This year in the opening series this kid laid a load of whop ass on the Astros and has not slowed down much since. Currently he is hitting a tad bit under 1100 for an ops for 74 official at bats. I wonder if the pirates would like to have Austin Meadows back.
Now I am not saying that Meadows will keep it up all year but by the end of the year I am fairly certain that he will be talked of very highly again by all the people in the know. So do not get me wrong I am not saying Tucker will be next year's Meadows. I never really was that big of a fan of his but it would be a mistake to move on from him. The cream always rises to the top.

Hopefully no one here has truly given up on Tucker...However, for the moment, I think most have refocused their excitement/attention, as far as hitting goes, to Alvarez, Stubbs and Straw. These three should be promoted up to the majors this year, albeit at different times. I think Straw will get promoted first, because he is a two birds with one stone type of player (Marisnick and Kemp). Alvarez will make the majors mid June. Stubbs, maybe September.

Don't get me wrong, I think we as fans tend to give up on young guys a little too early, and both White and Kemp have demonstrated value and production at times. But...it's getting hard to argue that both Straw and Alvarez wouldn't be improvements...potentially big improvements. If the team is still struggling with some inconsistency by June, there will have to be some hard decisions made, I would think.

Kemp and White probably get at least as long a look as Nori Aoki got in 2017.
White still has the third-best OBP on the team at .395 and began looking more like the Great White in today's game.
Even if White's OBP falls to ~.360, there's no way he finishes the season with SLG under .450, so that right there would be a .810 OPS.
Kemp is a different story in terms of what he has provided at the big league level over his career.

It would be funny if Kemp was playing 3B, all his throws went to 2B, regardless if it was a double play ball or not.

Maybe Kemp could be packaged with a prospect or two for a competent reliever. That would take a lot of the pressure off Devo, Valdez, and James.
Here are some teams Kemp might improve at 2B. Keep in mind that if given a starting job at 2B, Kemp would likely hit about like he did last year, meaning .743 OPS and getting on base ~35% of the time.
Tigers - currently using Josh Harrison, who after 74 AB's this season is hitting for .122 AVG and .384 OPS (and you thought Marisnick was a nightmare last year!) Blue Jays - their main 2B, Devon Travis, is on the 60-day DL and might miss much of the season. In the meantime they are using a platoon of Alen Hanson and Eric Sogard, both of whom have career OPS around .630 and have started the season cold.
White Sox - currently using Yolmer Sanchez, hitting for .599 OPS this year and carries a .660 career OPS.
Marlins - currently using the vastly overpaid Starlin Castro, who is hitting for .633 OPS (probably they only take Kemp if they can move Starlin somewhere, but who wants him is the dilemma)
Red Sox - with all the injuries to Pedroia/Nune/Holt etc. they are using guys like 3B Michael Chavis (career .733 OPS hitter) and shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin (.695 through his first 130 MLB AB's) at 2B. However they probably would prefer not to have to play guys out of position for too long, and Kemp is better than both those guys anyway.
