I’m just saying it’s no shocker that he had a bad series when he kept hitting it in the vicinity of Chapman, who is basically the top defensive 3B in baseball. If you don’t adjust, things like that happen. Well he tried to lay some bunts down to get Chapman to play more in, but he lost his ability to bunt temporarily. It’s not like I hate the fact that he pulls the ball. I just wish he’d play the percentages more often. Take what the defense gives you.

Altuve has now, at least temporarily, surpassed DJ LeMaheorifodi in HR, OPS, and OPS+. He'll have to stay hot, but he has certainly put himself in a position to maintain his Silver Slugger streak at this rate. He's still 30 points behind in AVG but he's trending in the right direction. At the moment: Altuve: 24 HR 59 RBI 74 Runs 5 SB .304/.366/.556 .922 OPS (140 OPS+) 3.5 oWAR DJ: 22 HR 87 RBI 90 Runs 4 SB .331/.378/.531 .909 OPS (139 OPS+) 4.5 oWAR

great offensive numbers......too bad we can't have what his numbers could be if he stopped swinging at pitches no where near the strike zone. He would have more runs scored if not for so many mental mistakes running the bases.

I laughed out loud when Baggy said that Jose swings at pitches on the first base side chalk while standing 7 feet from the plate and being 4'9.

Actually I believe they said he is leading the league in Runs Scored this month, and he has a real good chance at reaching 100 on the year even with all the missed time. He's in the top-5 in AVG and SLG in the AL, and 6th in OPS despite the horrible start recuperating from his knee surgery (and then missed time)....I'd say his approach is working just fine.

I haven't been a fan of him in the booth, but he has been getting better. Still talks waaaaaaaay too much, though. Berkman is superior. And honestly, the worst part about having Bagwell in the booth is the silly fawning that Blum does the entire time he's there.

I can't count the times I have seen him lunge at those pitches and nearly fall down while doing it. He must never watch video of his at-bats or he would realize how silly he looks swinging at those pitches.........signs of why he is labeled a dumbass.

It seems simple enough, but they keep messing up that basic concept. Now THAT"S dum bass.

Altuve's issue is that he's often undisciplined at the plate. He has world-class hand/eye coordination and relies too much on pure skill rather than putting himself in the best possible position to use that skill. If he could learn strike zone discipline he might hit over .400. Ted Williams said that the key to hitting was getting a good pitch to hit. Altuve doesn't do that nearly enough.

Imagine Altuve with Bregman's plate discipline or Bregman with Altuve's bat to ball skills. But I, for one, appreciate both for what they do bring to the plate.

Speaking of undisciplined, I watched Biggio swing over a down and away slider his whole career repeatedly. Well he is in the "Hall of Fame".

If every hitter did stuff the way the best hitters did, they'd all be great hitters. It's just not that easy. These players develop their approaches over years of play and practice. And whatever made them successful enough to get here, is likely what they're going to stick with. Altuve will never be a guy that walks a lot. Bregman will never be a guy that hits .330+. But they're still fantastic producers with their approaches.
Hitting is hard. So whatever approach they've found that works for them is fine by me if they keep hitting at the level that they do. Despite a relatively down year in many aspects for Altuve, he's 9th in OPS+ in the league and the 1st for all AL 2B. And Bregman is the 2nd best position player in the AL behind Mike Trout. Tough to complain about either of those guys right now.

As bad as Bags is in the booth, imagine having to sit through a game with Biggio in there talking. How many times would he say "I mean, it is what it is." or "You just have to tip your cap to them sometimes."?

If you get a hit 3 out of 10 times, you get a $100M contract.
