Let's try to get some good mojo going for Jose.
Through the first 6 games last year, Altuve was hitting .440 with a .964 OPS. This year .174 with a .588 OPS.
It's obvious he is pressing and frustrated. On the plus side, his K and BB ratio per plate appearance is basically the same as the last two years. It's just a matter of getting better contact on the ball. (And he did just narrowly miss two home runs in TB.) He needs to work on going with the pitch and making solid contact rather than trying to yack everything over the LF wall.
History says he should right the ship soon, provided he is feeling okay. His range in the field has looked good so far, and he has made a couple very heads-up defensive plays.
Side note: He is 1 stolen base away from 250 and 2 HRs away from 100.

As I said earlier, I think he's just not game-ready because he was limited in his reps during ST. Once he knocks off the rust, he'll be back to normal production.

Most likely that's all it is. One good multi-hit game and he is right back on track to where he should be. I expect he gets the day off today since the Astros are off tomorrow.

I know it’s asking a lot from the bottom of the order, but White, Chirinos, and Kemp frequently seem to be in RBI situations. They’ve got to pick it up a little bit, especially the Gattikkkkkus successor White.

Eh, Chirinos was hitting .273 with a .800+ OPS before yesterday, and White is hitting .273 with an OBP of .385 (just no power yet). I'm not really concerned about them. Expectations for them should be limited anyways. Same with Kemp, he'll likely get even less playing time than Marisnick due to his limited defensive capabilities.
Our typical 1-7 should be carrying the bulk of the weight.

I'd like to credit this thread as pushing Altuve to his two-hit game.

Comparison through 12 games for 2017-2018-2019:
2017: .319/.418.383 (.801 OPS) 0 HR 2 RBI 7 Runs 5 SB
2018: .370/.412/.413 (.825 OPS) 0 HR 3 RBI 7 Runs 1 SB
2019: .298/.346/.532 (.878 OPS) 3 HR 6 RBI 6 Runs 1 SB
Overall production-wise (OPS) he has't had this good of a start since 2016 even with the AVG currently down. Hopefully we'll see the AVG and OBP increase 25-35 points soon and see him being productive on the basepaths too.

Gotta give you credit Saint. Since you started this thread Altuve's batting average has gone from .174 to .314 and Jose is 12 - 28 in that span hitting.

What's crazy is the amount of power he is showing. Odds are considerably against him maintaining anything close to it, but I don't think a 30 HR season is out of the question. I just hope he doesn't start trying to be that type of hitter. Stick with the contact and the speed the majority of the time, but go ahead and let her rip during hitter's counts.

The good thing about not being a "stats guy" is that I can sit back, enjoy watching Altuve rake, and never have it ruined by thinking "Odds are considerably against him maintaining anything close to it".

Gotta give you credit Saint. Since you started this thread Altuve's batting average has gone from .174 to .314 and Jose is 12 - 28 in that span hitting. The record on this is clear. Someone in the Astros FO is a lurker on Refugees. We've seen too much Refugees advice successfully put into practice by Hinch and Luhnow for this not to be the case.

So since this thread was created:
.429/.469/.893 (1.362 OPS) 4 HR 7 RBI
We should have made it after the 2nd game of the season!

I think we should DH Brantley and call up one of the Round Rockers. I'm willing to give White some more time, but if he can't get it going I'd love to see that with Straw in CF and hitting 9th consistently.

I think Brantley is a little too careful out there because of the shoulder he once injured on a dive. Plus, I agree with you about the exciting possibilities with Straw out there. Plus, Reddick and Springer are better in LF and RF defensively. It just seems like an all-around upgrade.
