If Diaz is unable to play. we need to call up an infielder........I don't trust Kemp to play second base. On defense, Kemp makes bad reads. He’ll be relaxed and then flip out and react at the last second. It’s as if he doesn’t really see the ball well on defense.

Who would you call up? without thinking about this problem too much, I think I'd call up Alvarez (for all the obvious reasons). But, if an executive decision were made that the new guy on the roster must be an infielder, I suppose it would be DeGoti (pretty hot hitter of late, with good track record... also it seems Hinch likes him a lot) or SuperJack Mayfield (versatile infielder, sometimes clutch, sometimes error-prone... a lesser version of Marwin and Aledmys basically). If we're just talking about an injury replacement type of player for 1 or 2 weeks, I think either DeGoti or SuperJack could fill the need without too much damage, and maybe some nice surprises. However it's a big commitment contractually, financially, etc. to put a guy on the 40-man (with lots of subsequent trade implications), so I am not sure Luhnow would want to put one of those guys on both the 40-man and the active rosters for just a short cup of coffee in the Bigs.

Depth in the minors at 2B for prospects is concentrated at the lower levels. But Jack Mayfield is putting together a decent season at AAA and could help out in a pinch until the IL 2B occupants are ready to return. Decent power numbers, but more SO than walks and that in in AAA. But he does offer utility playing all the infield positions.

Both DeGoti and Mayfield are rocking OPS's north of .850 to start the season at Round Rock. They seem about as ready as ever to make the jump to the big leagues, although at 28 years old, Mayfield doesn't appear to have much of a future... he's probably already at about his peak skills-wise.
DeGoti is 24, though, and rose through the system quickly. Only 3 years ago, he was at A- Tri-City whereas Mayfield was already plugging away at AA at that time.

Don't forget that Bregman played some second base in college and was projected to possibly move there as a pro. Maybe it would be time to get Alvarez up as Bregman, Gurriel, and White could back up Kemp in a pinch and Alvarez can show us a little.

If Diaz is unable to play. we need to call up an infielder........I don't trust Kemp to play second base. Who would you call up? From what I have read the minimum service time required for Super 2 status in the past was 2 years and 122 days. If my math is right the latest date a player can be called up this year and get in 122 days service time this season (assuming he remains on the 25-man roster for the rest of the season) would be June 1st. I just don’t see Alvarez or Tucker being called up before June 1st. The team is 8 1/2 games up in the division and on a 9-game winning streak. The ‘stros are not desperate for a position player addition to the roster right now even if Altuve and Diaz are both on the IL. If Diaz is unable to play before Jose returns, I think Fisher will get the call. Bregman, Yuli and Kemp can all play second base. Yuli can play 3B if Bregman moves to 2B. White can play 1B if Yuli moves to 2B or 3B. Fisher has already been called up once this season and used his option for the season. No need to waste one of Alvarez or Tucker’s options or risk one of them qualifying for Super 2 status at this point. The team can get by until June 1st without calling one of those guys up. The Astros needed Correa a lot worse in 2015 than they do Alvarez or Tucker now and Correa wasn’t called up until June 8th.

I miss the fire Correa had as a rookie.
