His .940 OPS was the second-highest on the team, and he was a big part of helping Maryland get back to the Big Ten tournament.

Lee’s glove will need work if he is to establish himself in the pros. Over the past two years, he has committed 29 errors at short and third, recording a .937 and .936 fielding percentage at those positions, respectively. However, his success at the plate could be enticing enough for a late-round selection.

The University of Arizona signee missed much of his senior season with an injury. But he recovered in the playoffs, and, in a couple of pre-draft workouts with the Chicago Cubs and the Rays, Murphy said his arm felt great and had no pain. He said that scouts have known him for a couple of years. They know who he is. And he is open to signing. He said the round won't matter, but "it will come down to money," to sign. Maybe second day pick.

Mike Piazza, Dodgers, 1988 (62nd round), 59.6 WAR
He began his professional baseball journey as an afterthought, and he ended it by getting inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. An elite offensive catcher, Piazza was a 12-time All-Star who batted .308/.377/.545 with 427 home runs.

Round 38: Mark Buehrle, White Sox, 1998, 59.3 WAR

The 2017 AL All-Star with the Twins, who was traded to the Nationals later last summer, actually was taken in the 40th round twice. He didn't sign with the Yankees in 2003 but did when San Diego snatched him from Dixie State College of Utah a year later.

The Draft now ends after the 40th round, but in the past, some productive players were selected even later than that.

Keith Hernandez, Cardinals, 1971 (42nd round), 60.4 WAR
The slick-fielding first baseman made it from the high school ranks to St. Louis in just three years and developed into the 1979 NL co-MVP. Hernandez collected nearly 2,200 hits in a 17-year-career, captured 11 Gold Glove Awards and won World Series rings with the '82 Cardinals and '86 Mets.

Mike Piazza, Dodgers, 1988 (62nd round), 59.6 WAR
He began his professional baseball journey as an afterthought, and he ended it by getting inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016. An elite offensive catcher, Piazza was a 12-time All-Star who batted .308/.377/.545 with 427 home runs.

Orlando Hudson, Blue Jays, 1997 (43rd round), 30.9 WAR
Hudson brought a league-average bat and stellar glove to second base, winning four Gold Glove Awards and making a pair of All-Star squads over 11 big league seasons.

After a monster freshman season in which he hit .348, Guerrero entered his sophomore year with high hopes when it came to his team and his Draft potential. He injured his hand in the first game of the season when he was hit by a pitch and didn’t return until April. That limited him to 24 games this year, hitting .266.

“It was tough,” said Guerrero, who’s from Mamaroneck, N.Y. “I knew this was the year I was supposed to get drafted. It was obviously disappointing, but I did my rehab and did everything I could to get back on the field and when I came back I tried to make the best of the situation and help my team win.”

Miami Dade head coach Danny Price, who had six players drafted last year, said the Astros “outsmarted some people” by taking Guerrero despite his subpar sophomore season.

“We were really expecting big things out of him, but his injury set him back,” he said. “He’s a hell of a player -- plus arm, plus speed, very strong young man. When he got back he was trying to have four at-bats in one, but he’s got a really good future in front of him. It did not surprise me he got taken as high as he did.”

He played most of the season in center field and was named his conference's Most Valuable Player after hitting .492 with 10 home runs, 42 RBIs and a 1.647 OPS in 27 games.

“I’m excited to see how he does and how his game transfers to the next level,” Pleasant Valley coach Jon Macalutas said. “He’s extremely coachable and he’s a cage rat. He’s a great kid who had a special season.”

Barber committed to play at the University of Oregon as a freshman and says he has two good options to choose from.

“I can’t go wrong," he said. “From what I hear, I have good bat speed, and good hand speed, pretty good running speed. I feel like my bat speed could play well hopefully in the pros and see where it takes me. Hopefully I can further advance my tools and become a complete five-tool player.”
