I think this no-no puts a huge stamp on the Cy Young for JV.
Only a handful of starts left and barring a complete meltdown for the remainder of the season I think it's about locked down.
I hope Cole keeps trying to better him though. Should be fun!

17-5 with a 2.56 ERA. Leading the world in WHIP and Ks.

6th pitcher in MLB history to throw 3 or more no-hitters. And still has the stuff to have another.

6th pitcher in MLB history to throw 3 or more no-hitters. And still has the stuff to have another. I read an article on JV years ago in which the writer said that Verlander was one of the very few pitchers who had good enough stuff that there was potential for a no-hitter every time he takes the mound. Years later and that still hasn’t changed.

The HRs have been strange frustrating, but he has a dominant year.

Unless he falls apart, Verlander won the CV Young today.

Yeah, I think he clinched the Cy Young and the Hall of Fame in one fell swoop.

That guy in second place still has a shot. I'm looking forward to seeing if Cole matches Verlander today.

The only thing keeping JV from a potential pitching triple crown is Cole with the K lead. If Verlander gets one more start than Cole along the way, he could take that but it will be close. Obviously Cole has the better K rate.

So with only 3-4 starts left per pitcher, here are the top candidates. As good as Verlander and Cole have been, there are a few guys that are closer than we would think. A rough start or two could knock them down a peg. I didn't include relievers because none of them have a chance this year. Candidate Comparisons:
Verlander:
18-5 2.52 ERA (180 ERA+) 200 IP 264 K .770 WHIP 7.0 WAR
Cole:
16-5 2.73 ERA (166 ERA+) 184 IP 281 K .917 WHIP 5.3 WAR
Minor:
13-8 3.08 ERA (160 ERA+) 189 IP 183 K 1.176 WHIP 7.9 WAR
Morton:
14-6 3.11 ERA (144 ERA+) 176 IP 219 K 1.100 WHIP 4.4 WAR
Bieber:
13-7 3.24 ERA (147 ERA+) 188 IP 233 K 1.012 WHIP 4.5 WAR
Lynn:
14-10 3.81 ERA (134 ERA+) 181 IP 209 K 1.255 WHIP 5.9 WAR
Giolito:
14-8 3.27 ERA (140 ERA+) 170 IP 216 K 1.066 WHIP 6.1 WAR
*Verlander leads the league in Wins, IP, WHIP, ERA, ERA+, K/BB. *Cole leads the league in Ks, K rate, and has been the pitcher of the month twice in the AL. *Minor leads the league in WAR for pitchers, somehow.

That's why I consider WAR a worthless stat.

That's why I consider WAR a worthless stat. I wouldn't say worthless. It's just another thing to consider. I think it holds more value for position players.

How funny would it be if Verlander lost to Morton (Tampa again).

That's why I consider WAR a worthless stat. I agree. WAR to me is a made up stat to show how "dominate" Trout has been without his team winning anything in the process.
There once was a time when winning mattered above all.

Say JV gets 3 more starts, and even if he extrapolated a 1-2 finish, and gave up 4 ER's per game...... He'd be 19-7 with about a 2.72 era. He's a lock, unless he has a Miley like meltdown (which I doubt)

Well he didn't really help his CY case last night, but he did get a ton of Ks. Only 19 to go until 3000.

A quality start for JV is an off game. Ain't life great? And he was a bloop double away from at least not getting the loss. Rough night.

A quality start for JV is an off game. Ain't life great? In the world of stat mania, suprised the pin heads haven't come up with at "quality effort" stat for team offense for a game. I'd bet we'd suck at it, since it seems we are either scoring 1 or 20 runs a game.

I think JV kicked butt in 5/6 innings last night. His performance after the third inning was really damn good, to be honest.

Yeah he was shaky with his command in the first two innings whcih got his pitch count up, and he had bad luck with that bloop double. The HR was really the only bad thing he did. He may not have deserved to win, but he didn't deserve to lose.

He may not have deserved to win, but he didn't deserve to lose. I don’t get why they don’t force Olson to have to go opposite field. If you go inside on him, you’d better make sure it’s way in on the hands. Also, that strikeout call on Yuli last night was bullshit.
