I hate cake and eat it too speeches....
Without hamstringing our flexibility as an organization, I just can't see how the numbers work. Keeping the tandem of JV-Cole-Greinke would be a minor miracle.
So, say this happens.... Outside of Correa, what salary do we jettison?

gotta be either yuli or reddick, along with Jork Trade Reddick and Jake. Keep Yuli. We have replacements for Reddick and Jake......Tucker and Straw. What would deferring some of Cole's money to the balance tax?

Jv Greinke McCullers Whitley Sanchez/Urquidy/James If we can't sign Cole, there are other free agent pitchers we could go after. Wheeler and Odorizzi are both free agents.

gotta be either yuli or reddick, along with Jork Or all of the above. On the plus side, Yuli actually has trade value after the season he just had.

It also doesn't work especially if you want Springer extended as well.
I've said from the beginning I don't think they work out a way to keep Cole. That's part of the reason we traded for ZG, imo.

I wonder if the payroll limits are being discussed in the new union agreement being worked on. They need to get rid of any limits.

If small market teams aren't willing to spend more money to compete, they probably shouldn't have teams. Teams that never try to really take the next step forward (ex. Pittsburgh) shouldn't be allowed to keep tanking forever. The Astros tanked for a few years during the rebuilding process but as soon as they started getting good, our ownership started investing more. The Pirates had a chance to take the next step forward a few years back and never did.
I believe there should be an increased cap at like $250 million for the next decade or so, and then a minimum salary cap at $75-90 million.
Make it so that even rebuilding teams need to be bringing in some solid veterans to try and stay competitive (or pay their young controllable players better). If they don't reach the minimum salary cap, they lose out on draft picks. It hurts the game to see so many teams either amazing or horrible, and it's unfair to the fans. $75 million isn't unreasonable, but you've got 5 teams below that this year. All of them horrible except for Tampa Bay.
And instead of paying a luxury tax for surpassing the maximum cap, they lose out on draft picks as well. All of the teams no the benefit of draft picks so there is incentive for them to stay competitive but also not go out and buy all of the all-star free agents. However, if a team wants to hold on to their core players (like us) they have that option to pay and keep them without paying even more money on top of it. We just wouldn't get to draft as many or as high of prospects.

Keeping Cole was always something they were considering, but taking on Greinke's salary dimmed the probability of it happening substantially

Everybody seems to be forgetting Javier and Ivey. Javier has a solid chance at a rotation spot next year.

If you trade Yuli, train Yordan to be the 1B and rotate the DH. Tucker can replace Reddick. Trade Correa and Greinke to keep Cole if need be.
