OK......I am going out on a limb here and say who I think will be the first player we sign as a free agent. and, wasn't an Astro in 2019: ZACK WHEELER I’m thinking Grandal. We can re-sign Chirinos and have Stubbs back him up and spend the money on pitching. I like Grandal, but, I think it would be cheaper to go another route.

Someone said it before, but I am going with Rick Porcello....He is a classic Luhnow signing...bounce back candidate and he has decent spin rate... Porcello would be a good addition, but, I doubt if Wheeler would be as costly.

I think Wheeler is in a position to demand a decent salary for several years.
Of course some GM might prove me wrong, but I would only take a chance on Porcello on a deal that could easily be written off and he could be dumped to open a roster spot if he flounders.

I like Wheeler too, but he is #3 rated Free Agent pitcher....he is not Cole or Strasburg money, in the 30Ms a year range....but he could be in the 18-20M range....

I have heard it discussed that Wheeler could get a 4-year deal at $18 million per year or 5 years at $20 milliion per year. So, your numbers look about right. In my opinion, Wheeler would be a better addition than Porcello for the money,

I hope to God they don't sign some mid-tier pitcher to a 4 or 5-year deal.

I’m hoping they sign Wheeler and Pomeranz. I am still trying to understand why you are impressed with Pomeranz. I remember we hit him pretty well when he was with Boston.

Check his stats as a relief pitcher vs a starting pitcher. Huge difference last season and for his career. I would want him for a lefty out of the bullpen only...., and he should not be that expensive.

I like Grandal because instead of three free outs at the bottom of the order, there’ll just be two.

We need a lefty in the pen, and, if he has been good in relief and not expensive, he may be worth signing,

A pitcher the caliber of Cole or Verlander is worth a lot more than a catcher. You must have good catching but they are cheaper than top starters. Chirinos knows our pitchers and earned a new contract.....one that would be a LOT less than Grandal will want. He turned down a 4 yr/$60 million offer from the Mets last off season. After the year he had, he will want around %$20 million a year. We can Wheeler for that or less,.

The Houston #Astros sign 1B Yuli Gurriel to one-year, $8.3 million contract with $250,000 in award bonuses for 2020, and he has the right to declare free agency at the end of the season. Gurriel had the right to go to arbitration if he had not signed the guaranteed contract.

It's rare that a player takes a pay cut in arb even if he stinks (which Yuli didn't in 2019).
Also, his final arb year would have been 2021 without this contract.
Apparently he wants to get to FA, asap.

The 2021 season could be very different. We’d better make the most of it while we can.
