Breaking a few hours ago. Gerrit Cole signed by Yankees for nine years totally $324M. Good luck Mr. Cole (But not against us)
IMO... I really thought he would have broken the $40M barrier, but again that was with an shorter duration contract.
In any case $36M annually is not chicken feed.

And with a stroke of a pen the balance of power in the AL shifts east.

This would make beating the Yankees at least one more time next year so much sweeter. Especially after all of the allegations, etc.
Tough order though.

Beating the Yankees could be next to impossible unless we add another quality starter and strengthen the pen. I hope to hear that Cole is "plagued" in NY.......I had rather see an Astro hitter put a line drive in his teeth.

Lots of ups and downs. It's going to be a big culture change for him.

I have already seen two NY articles that say that if there is not a WS win next year, that it's on him. The expectation game is cruel little monster.

Most teams would rue those NINE YEARS, but I guess if any team can get through it, the NYY can. Nine years is a LIFETIME for a pitcher.

Since that overrated Eric Hosmer got nine years on his deal, look for Rendon to ask for the world.

Good on Crane if that's really the case. Nobody should blame Crane for not getting him after offering a quarter of billion dollars. And nobody should blame Cole for getting even more than that. More power to him.

Seventy four million more dollars, and the chance to finish your career playing for a storied franchise? Only a fool would turn that down.

I don't blame him. And the reputation that the Astros created for themselves over the last couple years probably didn't help, if we're going to be completely honest about it. Head to the biggest stage in baseball where you'll be viewed as a savior (plus make more money with more stability) or take less money and stay with a team with a currently shady reputation?

Yep, regardless of guilt/innocence, the Astros' reputation will be forever marred by the last couple of years.

If that offer to Cole is real then apparently Crane has no problem going over the cap. Good news. That means Luhnow can spend some money if he needs to, and he will.

I’m sure Crane can afford to pay the luxury tax one year. Right now Roster Resource estimates the Astros payroll for luxury tax purposes for 2020 to be just over $231 million. That is without moving any player or signing a FA. With Springer, Peacock, Brantley, Reddick and Gurriel coming off the books at the end of next season, the RR estimate of Astros payroll for luxury tax purposes drops to just under $127 million for 2021. Greinke, Verlander, Osuna, Correa, McCullers and Devenski all come off the books after the 2021 season. That drops the luxury tax payroll estimate for 2022 to approximately $62 million. I see Springer as the only one of the post-2020 season FAs that Luhnow will push hard to re-sign. He may re-sign Peacock if he does well in 2020 and is not too expensive. Of the post-2021 season FAs, I think Luhnow will push hard to re-sign McCullers if he is healthy and productive in 2021. I think Correa will be traded before he becomes a FA. Same goes for Devenski and Osuna. I think Luhnow let’s JV and Greinke walk after 2021. All that said, if Crane is willing to pay the luxury tax in 2020, I think Luhnow can sign Rendon this offseason and re-sign Springer after the 2020 season, if George wants to come back.

If Rendon doesn't plan on an extended career,. it would seem even more possible that we could sign him to a five-year deal...$140 million would not be too much to offer him. A lot depends on Rendon wanting to come home. Plus, some of these FA's take into consideration that Texas has no state income tax.

It's nice that we offered Cole 7 yrs/$250M, but the time to do that was last year when he was under contract. Not after he declared free agency

I know NYY offered Cole a longer term (2) years, but when you deduct effectively the 8.5% New York income tax, here is how our offer compares. Plus he would have avoided in playing in that NYY Freakshow.
Houston... $35.7 M annually. No state income tax. Not to mention much more favorable real estate expense, and real estate taxes than NY.
NY $36M annually minus 8.5% income tax equals $ 32.94M
Either guess (1) BorA$$ failed ot bring that point up, or (2) math is not a strong suit for Cole, or (3) He knows he'll suck by the late 2020's, and will milk the Stanks Bonilla style at the end.

I don't give Crane any credit here. It's a cynical thing to do after the guy took the time to write the city thanking us for his time here

It's a cynical thing to do after the guy took the time to write the city thanking us for his time here He is also the guy who showed up wearing a Boras cap and declaring he was no longer an Astro in the clubhouse immediately after game 7 of the WS. We owe him nothing for his half-assed thank you.

He was pissed because Crane never offered him an extension. That was dumb dumb dumb
