Verlander takes on Hamels
Doug would make sure that both McCann and Stassi are in the opening lineup (one guy as C and the other as DH).
A real shame Tyler White is not in the lineup as he crushes LHP (OPS over 1.200 vs LHP at AAA this year; compare to .940 last year over a larger sample size.) Last season with the Astros, in his 8 ABs against LHP, White hit two HRs.
Still, the Rangers are among the worst teams at both pitching and hitting, so the Astros should in theory be able to win even with one hand tied behind their backs.
Damn the torpedoes, and Go Stros!

I’m not a fan of having both catchers in the lineup, but I can see your point.

I’m not a fan of having both catchers in the lineup, but I can see your point. The reason I advocate the idea is that in an emergency (such as: the starting catcher gets ejected or injured, or pulled for a pinch runner), Gattis can play a few innings at C. The risk that he will actually come into the game and give up a run by means of a passed ball is very small compared to the extra runs the Astros stand to score on offense by having both McCann and Stassi in there against a LHP.

Hopefully a day off didn't cool their momentum. It would ease a lot of stressed people if we could start hitting better at home.

The key is playing funky music (post-punk, someone suggested; or big band; or Negro spirituals; or Gregorian chants -- anything to break up the MMP routine and set a new tone, both literally and figuratively).

let's hope we break our tendency to come off a road trip and stink up MMP in the first game back. The last time the Rangers came to town the offense sucked

Someone call into talk radio when Luhnow's there and ask him why Davis and White are not on the Astros

Someone call into talk radio when Luhnow's there and ask him why Davis and White are not on the Astros We could use one and both would not hurt. We get nothing from Gattis and very little from Marisnick.

I just realized we were skipping Morton. Was a reason given?

I just realized we were skipping Morton. Was a reason given? The stated reason was that it has nothing to do with Morton, but rather, JV wants to stay on a strict routine of 4 days rest.

Hmm. Okay... I'd be surprised if most pitchers didn't want to stay on a strict routine.

I guess ESPN hasn't heard that Morton is being skipped...he is listed as tomorrow's starter and Keuchel on Sunday

Honestly, I'd start Fisher over Marwin in left. Marwin is not meant to be an everyday player, and Fisher needs the ABs. Also, Fisher is 3 for 8 with only 1 K vs lefties this year, so it's not like he's an automatic out.

Also, White is really a better hitter against LHP than Gurriel is. If White were on the team, I'd give Yuli the night off (to start the game at least). Yuli or Marwin could come in to play 1B as a defensive replacement later in the game once the Astros have a lead to protect.

ONy game going on right now is Cubs vs White Sox. As expected, the Cubs are giving the Sox a spanking.
It's looking like the most likely candidates to represent the NL in the WS will be Arizona, Cubs, Cards, and Nats. The Braves and Phillies could make interesting Cinderella teams.
Overall, I like how a reinforced Astros team would line up against those clubs. By reinforced, I mean adding White, Davis, and possibly Tucker by August; trading for Kelvin Herrera; and perhaps also trading for an OF like Nick Markakis or Adam Jones or Denard Span.
But before we worry about the NL, got to win the AL West first!

As a special gesture to the Astros, the Rangers activated Rougned Odor from the DL today.
I do sympathize with Odor for all the teasing he must have taken growing up with that name.
It reminds me of that Johnny Cash song

The Blue Jays have just had to send STroman to the DL and it looks like they may lose Roberto Osuna for quite a while over this domestic violence thing.
If their team goes into a tailspin, it raises the possibility that the Astros could trade for one of their outfielders. Curtis Granderson and Steve Pearce will both be FA at the end of this year and both have been hitting well. Granderson, actually, has been hitting like Babe Ruth, although I don't think he'll keep it up as long as the Babe did.
There's also the idea some people have tossed around of getting Teoscar back. Teo's also done well this eyar, with 6 HRs and an OPS around .860.
I don't like any of Toronto's remaining pitchers, but those OF options are interesting. The Blue Jays are in a very very tough division so their only real hope would be to snag a WC spot anyway. Without healthy pitching, I just don't see them doing it. If they throw in the towel, they might as well get something in return for Granderson or Pearce.

What are the chances that the Rangers score only 1 run tonight off a solo HR from Galo?

Interesting, but don't like low average, strikeout players an Teoscar would not be an upgrade over what we have already (and in the minors). Pearce we had way back before we started winning and don't see him helping much either. He doesn't have much veteran presence to give. If the Astros really want to shake things up a bit they should go after a veteran that wants to win a championship (ala Beltran) and call up Tucker

The Braves designated Preston Tucker after hitting .272 with 3 HRs and 18 RBIs for Jose Bautista. lol, that guy can't catch a break.

I'm not seeing anywhere in the news reports that Atlanta DFAd him. He was optioned briefly last week, but brought back up when Dansby Swanson hit the DL. Right now Preston has a bench role, but he's still with the club according to everything I've read
