He looked better again last night. He was almost 3-5 if he hadn't hit that line drive right at Bogaerts in the 9th. My main thing with him is that I feel like he has started taking too many close pitches late in counts recently. Altuve is up there with Alou, Berkman and Bagwell, as bring the best Astros pure hitter of all-time...How would you currently rank those for as pure hitters? Don’t forget Brantley.

Another game of all or nothing for Jose. He's almost becoming just a full-on power hitter. Hard to argue with the production. The OPS is over .850 and he's on pace for 30+ HR and great defense. The home run was clutch as was the fly ball to right that moved Maldy to third. Maldy would not have scored from second on Brantley's single to left. He had a couple of bad AB's but came through when it counted.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Jose is not the same type of hitter when he broke in. He was the face of the re-build, which was particular for him being a Punch and Judy hitter.
I can still remember when Biggio broke in as a catcher. He seemed he was only going to be a slap singles hitter and collect a few extra base hits.

That goes to show you how bad the organization was for talent at that time. We had Brandon BarnesHe was suppose to be one of the future players also with a future. I had to look back the Stros were better with Fowler, for how short his career was in Houston, set the stage for George. That lead to a web of trades.

So Jose finishes the first "half" at:
.278/.361/.498 20 HR 55 RBI 65 Runs 4 SB 88 Hits 10 Doubles
He's currently on pace for: 36 HR 98 RBI 119 Runs (all of which would be new career highs)
If he hadn't missed that time with Covid, he'd be on pace for a 40/100/100 season. Obviously he has had a pretty poor July, but he certainly went out with a bang at the break. Hopefully the rest will do some good and he'll start getting that AVG up higher.

Definitely want to see his average up and more hits over the second half. However, the pace for HRs, RBIs, and runs is very nice! If he can finish at those numbers and get his overall average above .285, that would be a fantastic season.

He's on pace to have his best season since 2017 from a value standpoint, even if his AVG is quite a bit lower than normal for him.

I think the frustration is because of the approach. Most of us don't like the HR/BB/K approach which is why most people complained about Gattis and Carter all the time.
Obviously Altuve has a much higher AVG than those guys, but to go from a .300+ hitter to a .270+ hitter is a pretty big drop. It's hard to get frustrated with a guy getting a hit or three every game, even if he isn't generally anymore productive overall than a HR/BB/K guy. Expectations for him are different based on what he has done before, but now, going back to his knee issues since 2018, he appears to have changed his approach to be more of a power guy. It's not bad...it's just different.

My frustration lies in folks wanting guys to hit for higher average, and swing at pitches on the corner with two strikes. The pursuits aren't compatible

Home runs are nice but so are multi-hit games, which was Altuve’s specialty until 2020.

he is also headed to a .260 BA if he doesn't turn it around. Home runs are great, but, not the only thing necessary.
