These players are ineligible for a QO and would not cost us a draft pick if we signed them:
Javier Báez (midseason trade), Kris Bryant (midseason trade), Alex Cobb (previous QO), Nelson Cruz (previous QO/midseason trade), Danny Duffy (midseason trade), Eduardo Escobar (midseason trade), Kevin Gausman (previous QO), Kendall Graveman (midseason trade), Zack Greinke (previous QO), Kenley Jansen (previous QO), Starling Marte (midseason trade), Anthony Rizzo (midseason trade), Max Scherzer (previous QO/midseason trade), Kyle Schwarber (midseason trade), Marcus Stroman (previous QO)
Would you be for signing one of these guys?

These players are a lock to receive a QO: Freddie Freeman, Clayton Kershaw, Robbie Ray, Carlos Rodón, Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Trevor Story Would you give up our second highest pick to sign any of these guys? It would be hard to, considering our recent loss of draft picks.

I would like Báez more if he weren’t a K machine. His defense is great, though. I’m not sure if he’s more of a 2B or SS. Bryant and Marte are my picks.

A couple of weeks ago Stroman made a statement about putting the whole trash can gig behind us. I wonder if that was a gesture to put his old comments behind him.
Baez may be able to be fixed.

Hard to know how FA will work out with a new CBA yet to be hammered out.

Baez is clearly a fit, but like Correa he'll be looking for a long-term deal, no less than five years I imagine. I feel like they'd rather go short-term at SS and wait for Pena. I'm not sure I want to lock us in on Baez for the next half decade at $18-$20 million per.
Gausman would be an ideal target, but pretty much all 29 other teams can say the same. He likely gets 5-6 years are $25 million each.
Stroman would be a nice pickup, another ground ball guy like Framber and McCullers who could benefit from our infield defense, and shouldn't be as costly as Gausman (four years, $20 million each probably gets Stroman).

Gausman doesn’t have that QO tag, which makes him an attractive option for the rotation. The further I could push Framber down the rotation, the better.

Gausman, McCullers, Framber, Garcia, Urquidy would be quite nice, to say nothing of if JV accepts the QO.

I’ll start: 1. Starting pitcher(s). I predict no less than two. Nah. If you go to the FA market you select the player based on how they fit, primarily on defense and overall batting prowess. Then adjust your batting order if necessary. 3. Ace defender shortstop. 'Ace"? I dunno. SS seems a position that needs to be filled at least temporarily through FA acquisition. But for how long? Not 100% certain Click won't sign Mr Timex but if not we should expect someone solid but not necessarily a GG contender. Maybe? There should be plenty of good relievers on the FA market this winter and Graveman will be near if not at the of the list. I reckon Click will sign one.

I’d take a flyer on Gausman because of the lack of draft penalty. 2. This is my optional one. I’m not a fan of the impatient leadoff approach. Altuve is an RBI guy and that’s wasted at leadoff. I’d be tempted to try Tucker there mainly for the speed and steals. 3. I don’t think we need Alex Rodriguez at shortstop, but I’d put a premium on defense. Altuve’s arm and Bregman’s range require help. 4. I like Graveman but he’ll be highly coveted for the same reason as Gausman.

5. I appreciate this for stability’s sake. Dusty did a decent job even if he was annoying with the overuse of García and Raley.

Ray yes, Rodon depends on how healthy they think he is. Seager yes but I wouldn't want to meet his asking price so moot point there. Pass on the others.

Only if we can trade him to the Chinese league immediately after.

I'd be good with a 5-year deal on Baez. I don't think we should count on Pena 100%. Besides, if Pena is great he could be worked in plenty. I'm sure we'd be able to shuffle Altuve, Bregman, Baez, and Pena around plenty.
Gives us good infield depth for multiple years to replace Diaz when he becomes a free agent.
Add a good free agent starter and reliever, kick the tires on McCutchen, and pray that Yuli can have another decent year at 1B with maybe a little more power.
