I like LaStella but that seems like a longshot since the Giants are decent. Maybe if they keep sliding, he’ll be available. I think the rest are pipe dreams with the exception of maybe Diekman.

Bregman is not just "above replacement level." He's 30% above league average (replacement level is below league average) and is on-pace for nearly 5.0 WAR despite a .239 BAbip so far. And above-average defense. All that for barely more money than Brantley is making. Yet people can't stop complaining about him. Part of me almost hopes he continues on the rest of the season exactly as he is now, so years later when we inevitably have some scrub at 3B I can go "hey, remember when we had Bregman posting 4-5 WAR seasons and ya'll couldn't stop hating on him? Good times!" He's only had two seasons higher than a 4 WAR and they were three years ago. He's MAYBE on pace for a 4 WAR this season at his current rate. He's not doing close to as poorly as some would make it seem, but he also hasn't been as good as you make him sound since 2019 (when he should have been MVP). There's no maybe about it. He's posted 1.2 WAR in 42 games so far. The Astros have 119 games left. If he played as well as he has so far for all 119 of them, he's end up with 4.6 WAR. He's only missed 1 of the games this season so far (42 of 43), so even if you assume he misses another 3-4 over the course of the year from days off, he's still very comfortably on a 4.0 WAR pace or better, barring any (likely) improvement. He's easily the best 3B in this franchise's history and people can't get off his back. It's just extremely odd to me. Maybe he never posts another 8.0 WAR season. Is that the bar? Someone can't be nearly Mike Trout-level every year so let's blast him? Bregman is 0.1 WAR behind Yordan and 0.3 WAR behind Tucker, but somehow he's a huge problem and they aren't. Bregman is on pace to be four times better than a replacement player despite some poor BAbip luck so far and no one can stop criticizing him. I don't know. I can't figure it out.

Baseball-reference.com has him at .9 WAR putting him below 4.0 for the season at his current rate. That being said, I'm not really disagreeing with you. My original post about him was to show that a lot of the criticism is unfounded as he is actually having a very solid year. I think people are frustrated because he went from being an elite player for two years to being unhealthy and good (but not great) ever since. He's certainly not a problem player for this team, but I think the expectations (unfair or not) were that he would continue to be better than he has been. In the end, the catchers are the biggest hole in our lineup. Followed by CF and then 1B. We need more offense from Yuli for the position he plays. Obviously I don't expect the catchers to be amazing hitters, but they could be considerably better than they are. Yuli, on the other hand, plays 1B...and no matter how good he is with scoops, he needs to hit better than an 89 OPS+ and a .259 OBP.

Whether Bregman should continue to bat third, the offense would be improved having Tucker bat higher in the order
Walk rate individual ranks last 21 days 2. Kyle Tucker 20.5% .. 12. Yordan Alvarez 15.0% 13. Alex Bregman 14.6% 16. Michael Brantley 14.3%

I don't know why I typed Hernandez... David Robertson.... The Astros will probably re -sign Maldonado, since they have a hard-on for him ..... I would hope if they traded for Contreras, they would sign him to a three or four year deal.... Lee is an excellent defensive catcher, But I don't know if his offensive skills are going to be a noteworthy enough in the MLB....Diaz, maybe the Astros catcher successor...Leon is the Astros OF future....

Maybe some of it is semantics. How does someone define "elite?" For me someone who is 30% better than league average qualifies. I'm right there with people wanting more from him but I just can't figure actually complaining about a guy playing at a borderline All-Star level. Maybe I should point out to the critics that Breman's current 132 wRC+ is just a hair under George Springer's career 135 wRC+. So if Bregman now is a problem then I guess Springer always was.

People remember that he was once MVP runner up and should’ve actually won because Trout took one of his many injury vacations.

It just hasn't been to the levels he has shown in the past. The good thing is that historically he is way better the 2nd half of the season.

I just don't want the Astros to go in the playoffs with one of the worst hitting depth in the majors.... Even though out of a necessity, the Braves revamped their team at the trade deadline.....and blew the Astros out of the water in the WS...
