Houston batters have been giving Jeff a lot of breaks today swinging at stuff outside the zone. That one to Springer though was right down the middle

Now that was a real nice sequence of events after the ground out. Kind of made up for not getting a hit by helping to manufacture a run.

Samarje really isn't a horrible pitcher. To chase him in the 5th represents a great job by the Astros, who did it even in spite of an unwise baserunning decision by Bregman and an unlucky line drive by Gattis.

He wasn't going to beat that out. If the ball were handled well, then the chances of reaching first safely were low. But as he's leaving the batter's box, he has no idea if the first baseman will make a clean catch, whether the throw might be off line, etc. I'd like to see him hustle it out till the ball is in the 1B's glove. Sometimes, when the fielder sees the hitter running hard down the line, it causes him to rush the throw, increasing the chances of reaching base. I'm pretty hard on Altuve but I think that's stretching it a little. The pitcher only moved like 8 feet from the rubber. In any case, he redeemed himself beating out the DP, stealing, and scoring on the blooper.

I'm still not convinced that Gattis will be the DH the Astros want to bring into the postseason. His passivity at the plate often gets him into bad counts, and then he either strikes out looking or hits a pitch outside the zone, but weakly, and for an out.

As it stands it will be Gattis and Jake fighting it out.
