Of course they make this trade when I'm out of pocket for a couple hours.
This is a fine deal. Mancini is a rental because he will turn down that mutual option. But we really didn't lose a lot. I like McDermott but he's not a game-changing prospect, especially with our current pitching situation. Siri is whatever; can't hit, won't hit, and we picked him up for nothing as a MiLB free agent.
My biggest concern here is that the Astros think they've got their guy. To me, they should still be after Bell. Mancini can play LF and Bell 1B. Mancini is a marginal upgrade over Yuli, now that he's been getting better at the plate. Considering the Yankees nabbed Benintendi and now Montas, we need more. We need an impact. But again, that doesn't say anything about this deal. In a vacuum, this is a solid move; addressed a clear need while losing nothing of real consequence to the present situation, and probably the future.

Forgot to mention Jayden Murray. This helps as well make the Mancini trade even better. Love Murray. Great slider, solid heater as well. Feel like he's a reliver long-term but could be a high-leverage one.

That's...a little stiff for a rental, but catchers that hit are always going to bring a premium. Losing Valdez stings a bit. Abreu is a mediocre prospect. It's not bad. You can't fleece people with every trade. |
