Just another unheralded later-round college pitcher the Astros are turning into a gem.

What do you know about Joey Loperfido, Ashitaka? He looks like a big leaguer to me. I'm very bullish on him and the other prospect guys I've talked to are in agreement. He can play five positions, hit for average, draw some walks, steal bases, the power is developing, and he's a lefty. If not for Dubon's breakout he would probably be with the Astros at some point this year in that role. I think he's already leapfrogged Dirden on the depth chart.

My Top 10 after watching the first month and change:
1. Drew Gilbert 2. Korey Lee 3. Jacob Melton 4. Colin Barber 5. Colton Gordon 6. Ryan Clifford 7. Spencer Arrighetti 8. Joey Loperfido 9. Justin Dirden 10. Will Wagner
Had a hard time figuring out the 10th spot. Almost went with Cuban star Kenni Gomez but he's really far away and young, and I haven't seen much from him this year (did well in the DSL last year, though). Other choices were a bunch of pitchers whose stuff is too mediocre to get excited about or whose command is to wild to get hopeful of. But this organization can turn any of them into stars, of course.
I could have easily put Clifford higher. I just want to see a little more from him first. Lee is at least a good defensive backup and that's before you consider his significant offensive improvement so far, definitely keeping hope alive for him being a frontline guy. Would have gone Melton #2 despite that, but he's struggled since the A+ promotion.
Colton Gordon is easily (not massively, but easily) the best arm in the system IMO now that he's healthy. By the time the season is over I would not be shocked if I have him #2. Expect to see him in ST next year.
Dirden has been better since his awful start, so I didn't bump him from the list, but he could get eclipsed quickly if he doesn't take a step forward. A lot of people think that's too high for Wagner, and I don't think he's special, but I do think he's a big leaguer, and I'm not convinced a lot of the arms ahead of him on most people's lists are, mostly due to serious command issues.

Shay Whitcomb promoted to AAA Quincy Hamilton, too. I don't love Whitcomb, he's striking out way too much still, but he has great power and played 2B, 3B, and SS. Really rare power from a middle infielder. Runs well, too.

Is there anyone who can play first. We need someone who can hit better than the pitchers. Loperfido plays 1B, 2B, LF, RF, CF, but primarily OF. That's about it. Matijevic is already 27 and still can't fix his strikeout issues, I have no real hope for him.

Quincy Hamilton 3-for-8 in his first two games in AAA. All three hits are bombs! That Albuquerque ballpark...
Dirden is hitting .343 over his last 102 ABs (May 4th to present).
Corpus has a heck of a lineup right now. Gilbert drew three walks. Kenedy Corona had two hits and a steal. Dezenzo was 4-for-5 with a triple (he played 1B). Loperfido had a single and a bomb and drove in three runs. 13 runs on 17 hits for the Hooks. I said I wanted to see how Dezenzo handled the jump to AA; he is hitting a mere .378 with a 1.068 OPS in 11 games since the promotion.
Rhett Kouba allowed 3 ER in 4.2 innings (a two-run bomb kept him from completing 5 IP with just 1 ER allowed), but struck out 9 against just 1 walk.
Ryan Clifford was 2-for-4 with a double and a bomb.
Last year's 3rd-round pick Michael Knorr finished 5.0 innings, allowed 2 runs (1 ER), and struck out 10 while walking 2.
Nic Swanson (16th round in 2021) is having a surprisingly-good season. 2.68 ERA in 43.2 innings. He has truck out 47 and walked 18.

Do you feel Gilbert can help the major league team right now? This offense badly needs a consistent shot in the arm. I think he can. We need a high energy guy. It's possible, but I don't think he's ready yet. In fact, he's hitting just .097 this month in AA. There's some BAbip stuff going on, but he still needs more time. Honestly I wouldn't call up an outfielder. We're already not able to see Meyers and Chas consistently because of Julks. And then they like to use Yordan out there. Yainer can play LF and they need to get him in the lineup more. Yet another OF will just clog things up further. We've got to get Abreu going. Yordan is out right now. Altuve isn't all the way back. And no one is talking about it, but Tuck has been pretty poor at the plate for the last month or so. Bregman seems to be hot or cold week by week. We need our regulars to get consistent and healthy. I don't think calling up a prospect is the answer.
