This board meant the world to Olpapa. He thought the world of you guys. I was lucky enough to have been in his life the last 6 years. He was always very positive and gave me some good advice on life. There was never a day when he wouldn't talk about his Astros. This is a kick in the gut to me. Olpapa will be rooting on the Stros and our board from Heaven.

Checked all the boxes. Great insight, humor, engaging, supportive, upbeat, guiding, patient, resourceful, respectful, kind. I don’t think anyone ever had a problem with Olpapa, nor should they have….Just the classiest of people here. Will long be remembered and talked about.

That's really tough to hear. You can't always tell much about someone from just their online persona, but you could always tell that he is/was a very thoughtful sincere person.

I had messaged olpapa the other day to check up on him and was a little alarmed when he did not respond. We had a few more messages here recently as my wife recently passed after her cancer migrated in a similar fashion as did his. This particular cancer is very painful and my sincere hope and prayers will be for him to pass peacefully with as little pain as possible.
My only guidance to anyone who knows him and loves him would be to hurry to his side and share whatever moments you may have. They say he has weeks but they do not know, it could be just days as it was for my wife.

Thank you all for those kind words. She passed peacefully, rather quickly and without pain. A fitting end to a live well lived.
I am hoping olpapa finds the same end.

I never know how to respond to these things that happen in life. I hadn't been close with my Mother and other siblings for many years. He called me to tell me I need to come and say goodbye. While here in NY they have places that specialize in Hospice Care while in Texas they are sent home. So not only is a family losing someone they love to the ravages of the disease they have they have to watch up close which makes the pain even worse. My thoughts and prayers to the olpapa family and may he not suffer in pain for too long.

Olpapa and I had several discussions about various aspects of his health. He reached out to me more than once and while I’m not his physician and obviously couldn’t legally or morally tell him what to do I was able to clarify some questions he had. I hope it helped at the time. He seems like a genuinely nice guy.
In my profession suffering and death is a daily occurrence; sometimes it’s difficult to keep fighting a battle you know you’re eventually going to lose. My mother, a fiery five-foot-tall red-headed Irish woman (she would never let us refute her claimed height of 5’2” by actually measuring her) succumbed to a massive right MCA stroke in 2019. She suffered for 34 days before dying. My father passed in 2021 of lung cancer even though he didn’t smoke. His body weight dropped from 205 to 120 pounds in 14 months. He was fully conscious and aware one moment and gone the next. They were married for 68 years.
My wife suffers from an terminal and incurable condition that waxes and wanes. To be human and care about other humans is to eventually know suffering.

Having seen more than most people share of Death up Close and Personal, I find I have to dig Deep to find empathy towards Death. This is one of the things War took from me. Having seen too many taken away by a Useless War.
I try to understand how People like Olpap's family are feeling but in the end, I know that Olpapa will have his peace from the pain.

When others give tribute/recognize to your own life/contribution, it means we were here/we mattered. I hope we all cherish the time we have with one another. That we create great memories/stories. Thank you all for being here over the years. May we always chat in this time or the next.

If somebody has the address of where he is at and can message it to me, I'd like to send something. His address is 2543 Durant rd. Lufkin, Tx 75904. I am in the middle of planning my wife's celebration of life. In talking with one of my neighbors she shared with me a story of her celebration of life that proved to be premature. She recovered. What she shared though was to actually do the celebration while someone was alive to enjoy it and participate in it. It helped her understand how rich her life was and how impactful it was to others. It may sound a bit morbid but it would highlight the importance of that persons life to that person before they depart. Kind of like what happened in "it's a wonderful life". Perhaps that would be an idea worth considering for olpapa.

"So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal." -- 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
Those verses went from good to unspeakably great watching dad fall apart for two years from cancer. May we all think and search our hearts long and hard to determine if this is true for us.
