Six pitchers, one each C, SS, OF, though the SS seems like he may end up at 2B or OF.

Don't expect it, either; under Dana Brown, they like athleticism and up the middle defense. I was hoping Tommy White would have enough concerns about his glove and speed that he would fall to us in the 3rd round, but Billy Beane said nope.

Quick break from draft stuff, but Zach Cole is off to a great start this month. He's probably the toolsiest guy in the farm, plus CF defender with a plus-plus arm, legit power and bat speed, left-handed hitter, base stealing ability...great talent. Hit tool and contact ability have been the limiting factor (we got him in the 10th round, after all). In 8 games this month he is hitting .429 and has just seven strikeouts, a massive improvement for a guy who has been above the 30% strikeout line until now. Small sample but very hopeful. If they can keep developing the hitting ability his ceiling is super high. Here's a nice piece on Chase Jaworsky, who we nabbed with saved bonus money on an overslot deal last year: astrosfuture.com/2024/07/x-factor-astros-prospect-chase-jaworsky-uses-his-speed-to-impact-the-game/We're a little over four hours away from finding out if Dana Brown's crew thinks they'll have enough bonus money to get another overslot prep guy. They got two last year...

Any picks you really excited about? So far nothing exceptionally exciting today. Last guy Bryce Boettcher is a linebacker at Oregon, too. Great athlete. We'll see if he can hit. Verdugo is a rising talent that slipped under the radar, could have easily gone 5+ rounds earlier in a thinner draft class or with more eyes on him. I like what they've done overall so far though. Some people say it's safe, and that's true, but giving up a pick for Hader among other things has tanked their bonus pool, not to mention the pick itself that was lost (derp derp Crane). They've done an impressive job with what they have to work with IMO. I'm noticing a theme from last year and this; finding some higher upside later on with guys who scouts didn't get to see as much due to injuries. Tredwell is the big name from last year, but Sullivan and Hertzler this year as well strike me as guys with a lot more talent than their draft rounds suggest. Caden Powell is similar in that people think he won't stick at shortstop, so they backed off. But his bat is good enough that there's MLB value even as a corner OF if need be. Scouts can do weird things sometimes. Brown is showing that this really is where his talents lie IMO.

Astros keep showing that they value college performance (this has been a theme back to Luhnow's days). Jason Schiavone is a catcher who led his team in home runs and was second in runners caught stealing in his whole conference. But the conference is the Sun Belt Conference which tends to be ignored despite being Division 1.

Nationals just drafted a guy named Sir Jamison Jones. Yes, his actual name. Mother gave him "Sir" for a first name.

So far: 8 pitchers, 2 catchers, 2 shortstops, 2 outfielders No 3b or 1B? Strange, even though you will rebuke that on your next post Nope. Both of the OF are CF as well. They want up the middle athletes. You can move a SS to 3B or wherever if you want later. Same CF to corner OF. Or make a trade. I'm not saying they will never draft a clear corner guy, but they want athletes. EDIT: on that note, they took two 3B last year (Ryan Johnson 8th round, Austin Deming 10th round). So it's just a strong preference. Deming is hitting and for power in A+ ball, but he's striking out like a fiend and is old for the level, wouldn't be surprised to see him gone in a year or two. Same for Johnson, though he's playing a lot of SS so he'll have a longer leash.

Big run on high ranked prep players in the 20th round so far. Let's see if Brown's team tries for one, too.

20th Round Pick: Ky McGary, RH hitting OF from Sandra Day O'Connor High School in Arizona.
He was the 212th ranked prospect coming into the draft. This is their shot at getting a high end prep guy if they can make the money work.
