Good get with no downside. He was a 25th rounder and has been slow developing. He's 27 years old already and has never debuted. So a long shot to be sure. But he's 6'7", lanky and athletic, and is 93-95 with a max of 97-98. Had a solid year and showed improved control and a 50% GB rate. Needs to miss more bats. At his age and size I would not expect to see any further increase in velocity, so sequencing, mechanical adjustments etc. will be results, rather than stuff, oriented. Long shot but solid MiLB depth at worst, and maybe they can get more out of him.

www.mlb.com/astros/news/dana-brown-astros-gm-q-a-on-alex-bregman-justin-verlander"I think [Jacob] Melton has a chance to come up and make an impact. I also think Spencer Arrighetti can make an impact as a starter. He is throwing the ball well. In his first Spring Training outing, he had two really good innings, so he is off to a good start. Melton is not off to a great start, but he has made a lot of adjustments. He is working on a new approach hitting-wise. But I think he is going to get to his power. He can steal bases and he is a really good defensive player."

MLB.com has updated it's Astros Top 30 prospects for 2024 www.mlb.com/prospects/astros/The good: big rises for Fleury and Blubaugh, I figured they might not get enough love. Glad Bloss is getting his due as well. And at long last, Pedro Leon falls way down. The bad: Quincy Hamilton not even on the list is a mistake IMO. Wagner not being in the top 10 is semi-defensible but I'd have him there; 15th is too low at any rate. I'd probably have Jaworsky and Tamarez higher as well, maybe Fisher too. Aside from trading off Gilbert, Dana has done well farm-wise so far. There's at least a pulse down there now.

But simplifying things for him in a relief role could unlock his potential. I won't say he could be the next Bryan Abreu because Abreu has multiple double-plus pitches, but the overall profile is similar.

Minor League pitching assignments to begin the season. Notably Tredwell is not here, hope there's no serious injury...

Sugar Land had their season opener yesterday.
Arrighetti went 4.1 shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out five, but walking five as well.
Loperfido had a two-run bomb and a sac fly for a three RBI night (so glad we have Singleton instead).
Dylan Coleman, who might get called up very soon if things continue with the Astros bullpen as they have, pitched a perfect inning, striking out one.
Quincy Hamilton, Trey Cabbage, and David Hensley all got on base multiple times.
The other three teams don't play their first games until next Friday, April 5th.

Loperfido hit two more bombs. Three home runs in two games. Hensley was 1-for-3 with a walk. Tamarez got blown up because of a couple of bombs, but 1 BB and 6 K in 4.1 innings is nice to see from him.

Shay Whitcomb just walked it off for Sugar Land. Arrigheti started tonight: 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K. Loperfido took an 0-for-6 a couple nights ago and still has an OPS over 1.000, but Singleton still has a job...

JV made a rehab start for AAA tonight, 6 ER in 3.0 IP. Forest Whitley pitched, too! Loperfido has 5 bombs in 8 games.
They started Melton at AA instead of AAA and he's hitting .083 so far...
Things looking better in A+ ball, Brice Matthews hitting .333/.467/.500 out of the gate, and Luis Baez at .429/.467/.929.

Loperfido hit three more bombs tonight, including a slam. He has 9 HR in 13 games. But let's keep Abreu on this roster.

doesn't count if it’s in Albuquerque. No correlation to MLB Yeah, but how hard is it to outdo a 1B having a .227 OPS? A guy with a 37% strikeout rate in AAA aint the answer. The real answer is to have Dubon play first if we aren't patient with Abreu, who actually had a good spring training.

Will Wagner is on a 7-game hitting streak; he's hit .407 during those games, drawing 5 walks as well. He has twice as many walks as strikeouts on the season (18 to 9 in 22 games).
Blubaugh now has four AAA starts under his belt after initially pitching one game in AA. Sub 4 ERA and more than a strikeout per inning. Could be a guy you see late in the year if the injuries and craziness keep happening, but more likely a Spring Training 2025 guy.
Melton is warming up. 3-for-5 with a bomb in each of his last two games. OPS up to .856. Five steals as well.
Miguel Ulloa had a nice start with 7 Ks and 1 BB in 5 innings. The one walk is huge, as command issues have plagued him. Bullpen arm at best if he can't get that sorted out.
I expect a Jake Bloss promotion to AA before long. He's clearly outmatching the A+ ball competition. 8 K vs. 1 BB in 5 innings in his last game. ERA is a mere 2.08 now, with 13 K/9.
An early candidate for this year's out-of-nowhere-college-pitcher-nobody-who-breaks-out is Aaron Brown. 9th round pick from Middle Tennessee University back in 2021. He was just too hittable his first two seasons, but suddenly in AA he owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 14.6 K/9
