If Luhnow were to trade for Abreu, I believe Davis is gone. If we have Yuli and Abreu on the roster next year, one of them will play 1B and the other DH. No room for Davis. I was looking on the COT's link on contracts, this is his last year at 13 mill, I actually thought he was making more. I remember the Stros were in on him, AE next year and FA in 2020. I just can’t make acquiring Abreu this season make sense. How would we get Yuli, Gattis and Abreu in the lineup at the same time this season without weakening the defense to the point that any gain in offense would be more than offset by the loss in defense.

Exactly and that is why I don't think we go after Abreu. He won't replace Yuli or Gattis so why would we need him? If we are going to deal for a bat, it should be an outfielder. Our main target has to be the pen. I wish we could sucker somebody into taking Giles off our hands. Fans of another team need to get to watch him squat. I agree with you. I can’t see how adding Abreu makes sense. We need to add an OF bat and I think that bat is at AAA waiting for the callup that is coming soon. I really think Tucker can give this team a spark.

I agree with you there. How this organization goes, Davis would have the first shot.

Please explain the rotations the team can make to get Yuli, Gattis and Abreu into the lineup at the same time without hurting the defense. Well they wouldn't get 100% of time each if there are no injuries, but Gattis could catch a few games down the stretch also. Gurriel can play some 3B now and then too. But I expect someone to get hurt too.

It's more about depth with a proven excellent hitter. Gurriel doesn't have to play everyday... He's mediocre when he has no power.

He would do well enough for 5-10 games to give McCann extra rest and not burn out Stassi before the postseason.

I just think if you have the chance to add an all-star caliber hitter for another deep postseason run, you add him. Gurriel is a 120 OPS+ hitter at best IF he gets his power back. I love Gattis but he's streaky too. Abreu is a 140 OPS+ hitter who hits 30 HRs and drives in a 100 runs even on bad teams. Plus he could DH next year and Gattis could walk. Davis would still get some PT next year.
Obviously if it's feasible prospect wise. I wouldn't give up the farm for him. We need a shutdown reliever more.

It weakens a little, on and off, but I think the offensive boost would out weigh it. The idea is depth though. More days off to keep people rested, more good matchup and swap opportunities. We're in a position to be greedy.

You were saying? My point still holds though. Gurriel is a professional hitter, but he isn't at Abreu's level. And even if he was, let's be greedy. Depth and a plan for next year.
