Wasn’t surprised to see this at mlbtr before the Machado deal was finalized:
“3:41pm: There’s a “possible snag” in the reported agreement between the Dodgers and Orioles that would send star infielder Manny Machado out west, according to Steve Phillips of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (via Twitter). Precise details aren’t known, but it seems that some concerns arose in the physicals of the prospects that would go to Baltimore in the swap.”

Now that Machado has been moved, activity will probably pick up.

From mlb.com by Richard Justice:
“1. Orioles closer Zach Britton The O's should have gotten the hang of things by now after listening to offers for Machado and Britton for the past 12 months. Even the teams bidding for Machado could turn their attention to Britton, because he could upgrade every contender. He has looked more and more comfortable since returning from the disabled list on June 12. The impending free agent begins the second half having made seven straight scoreless appearances.
2018 salary: $12 million Contract status: Free agent after this season Front-runner: Astros”
From Astros.com by McTaggert:
“Possible scenario The Astros nearly had a deal for Orioles closer Zach Britton this past season, but were rebuffed by Baltimore ownership at the non-waiver Trade Deadline. Perhaps Houston can return to the O's and revisit the deal, offering some of its top prospects, including first baseman Yordan Alvarez and pitcher Cionel Perez, along with Fresno outfielder Derek Fisher and infielder/outfielder J.D. Davis”
The Dodgers just got Machado for 5 prospects. The highest ranked prospect was Diaz, their #4, who is ranked #84 in the mlb.com top 100 prospects in baseball. No way do I see Alvarez, Perez or Davis included in a trade for Britton. Fisher.., maybe.., but none of those guys.

We have to decide how much to pay for a rental relief pitcher with a history of injuries.

My spidey sense still tells me Stammen, Cimber, Iglesias, or Yates would be better pick-ups than the injury-prone Britton.

Hopefully expiring contracted players do not cost top prospects...more so in blocked players that are on the fringe on being Rule 5 protected or not...

Cimber/Stammen/Yates would probably cost 1 prospect in the 5-10 rank, 1 prospect in the 20-30 rank, and 1 prospect in the 31-40 rank. maybe I'm wrong. Hard to say not knowing how the Padres internally evaluate the Astros farm system. Iglesias would be more expensive. maybe takes 2 guys in the 5-10 rank range. but I think Luhnow could get a pitcher without giving up Whitley, Tucker, Alvarez, or Bukauskas.

Indians just acquired Hand for their top prospect, Mejia....when Miller comes back that is going to be a great trio (Allen)

Not a bad deal for the Padres either.

Have a feeling that the Pads were requiring Whitley as a part of any deal. In any case, CLE just cranked up a notch in their quest to be competitive in October.

I imagine Luhnow shuts off any negotiations with those who require Whitley or Tucker in order to make a deal and I totally agree. In my opinion, the Indians STOLE Brad Hand from the Padres and got another pitcher in the deal all for ONE prospect, even though Meja is a top prospect. I think Luhnow is a top GM and one of the best in the game, but, my fear is that he sits around like he did last year and fails to improve this bullpen. If he does, we have problems..........Sitting around last year got us Liriano and Clippard who were not upgrades over what we had. He needs to go after Iglesius or other top relievers now instead of watching other competitors land them while he watches.

I think Luhnow has been after Britton for quite awhile. I think his idea is that getting Britton would give us two closers........Rondon from the right side, Britton from the left. If he can make a deal with the Orioles, I wish he'd offer enough to get Adam Jones in the deal, too Maybe he can get them to take the suatter off our hands, too.

You’ve gotta admit though, if Luhnow could pull it off, it would be a great way to send Giles on his way. He could get the Assistant GM in Charge of Videos to cut out a closeup of Giles’ from the video as he says to AJ, “Fk you man.” Then he could let AJ meet with Giles and play the video while the two of them watch and ask Giles, “Remember this?”...then say.., “No...., Fk you man”.., hand Giles the envelope containing the letter informing him that he has been traded to the Orioles and walk out of the room.
