But you said that at the beginning of the year and then he was arguably our MVP for May. Some guys are streaky. You get through the cold streaks to get to the hot streaks. How many of his cold streaks are you willing to accept? He’s the ultimate “wool over your eyes” type of player. He’s Superman for a brief stretch and Clark Kent the majority of times. If they can carry the team during their hot streaks, which Gattis did pretty well, I'm okay with it most of the time. I wouldn't say he couldn't be given some extra days off when he's cold though.

I get what he’s saying, but the flaw in his argument in he says that based on OPS, Stassi is better than Gurriel, yet he wouldn’t want the guy hitting with RISP over Yuli. If OPS is his barometer in judging who are the best hitters, then Stassi would tend to be better in overall situations. His position is wishy washy. I wouldn't want most players hitting in RISP over Gurriel right now (although Stassi has been damn good at that too), but Gurriel is streaky too. He's hitting about as bad as Gattis over the last two weeks and you want to bench that guy ( that's wishy washy). A 1B with limited power and poor to mediocre on base skills (even when he's at his best) can be improved upon. And what's wish washy about saying that Stassi has overall better production when you look at their percentages? Stassi gets on base more and has more power, even though he is a fraction of the cost and plays a tougher defensive position. That's just a fact. Gurriel is better with RISP but only if you want to use AVG. Stassi has the better OPS with RISP. It's basically a wash. Gattis is a hot and cold player who’s mainly cold. I think you play the guy when he’s hot but ultimately don’t expect too much from the guy. He has an unorthodox stance and swing and routinely rolls over on pitches for tailor made FC’s and DP’s. As for Stassi, he’s a great backup catcher, possibly one of the better ones in baseball. To use his limited playing time OPS in comparison to Gurriel’s is silly. Once again, I ask if Stassi has done anything meaningful recently on offense. I agree that Gurriel isn’t great comparatively with other 1B’s in terms of power and XBH. I say he’s consistent enough to oust Gattis as DH if you’d find a better bat with adequate defense for the 1B position.

It’s one thing if Springer were totally back or if Correa were in the lineup, but with the way things are, how comfortable are you with relying on Gattis to pick it up on offense?

Except one plays a premium offensive position and is being paid $13 million.

Springer is doing better, but he’s going to have to work his way to at least the .270’s before I say he’s totally back.

That's like asking who do I want to steal a base out of Bregman and Rickey Henderson. But that's only one type of situation. What abou this production the rest of the time? You don't seem to care about that. It's not so cut and dry with just RISP either. Why is OPS alone not a good comparison but AVG with RISP alone is? Come on now...

Gattis is like Reddick. They’re complementary pieces to a winning team when said team is doing well on offense. They do have the ability to carry the team for a while. Would I rely on that ability? No.

No. Gattis shouldn't be brought back next year because we shouldn't need him. Gurriel needs to DH next year. But I wouldn't bench Gattis this year unless we traded for somebody that was an obvious upgrade.

I like Stassi but I’m not going to declare him as one of the team’s better hitters when he’s a backup catcher and barely plays even when the starter is out. If management thought so highly of his OPS, then Federowicz wouldn’t have had so many games nor would they have added an offensively poor catcher like Maldonado.

Gattis can do it by slaying dragons and pushing apart a rock wedge to form the Strait of Gibraltar.

I never said he was one of our best hitters. The point I've been trying to make is that we're not in desperate need of upgrading at C compared to some of the production we've gotten at other positions, positions that are supposed to provide considerably more offensive production (LF and 1B and DH). Stassi is a backup catcher because we had McCann, he could be a primary catcher with Stubbs in a platoon situation. Fed had games because no catcher plays every game now, not because they don't like Stassi. They got Maldonado because typically he is a higher level defensive catcher than Fed and he has had more offensive success than Fed. Stassi will still get more starts than Maldonado.

I really don't think the team is depending on Gattis to carry them. Gattis is there to provide some power and help drive in some runs now and then, and he can catch in an emergency. Even when slumping, he's one of the few guys we have that can change a game with one swing, so there is some value there. (Not enough value to pay him a lot of money next year or beyond, but enough that he has been useful and cost effective for us since we picked him up.)

I don’t disagree about desperation because catcher should not be a focal point for our offense like 1B and LF. I just think that OPS shouldn’t be used in a vacuum because we both would rather have certain players in the big bucks situations. Stassi is a good enough player for the Astros. If you’re not doing well on offense, do well on defense. I think that for the most part, Gurriel and Stassi fit that bill. It’s also why I crap on Gattis so often. He has one job - if batting .265 or getting on base at a .330 clip is too hard for him, find someone else to do the job.

If you replace yuli with a HR hitter who also matches yulis other benefits, then that's an upgrade. If you replace yuli with a HR hitter who does NOT match yulis other benefits, you have Chris Carter...and that's a loss. Now...who do you propose we could get to "easily" meet the first criteria I mentioned above? Or are you wanting a Chris Carter because you (and chicks) dig the long ball? Jose Abreu and Jose Martinez off the top of my head would mostly match that. I dont think either of those two will be easy to get

If he wasn't signed for more years I'd say let him go just like Gattis. But since we DO have him, his defense at 1B isn't very good so put him at DH.
