It all started with the misplay by Blackmon. What a difference a year makes with that guy. Last year, he was like a $20 million player.

I guess Peacock was already getting warm so might as well use him here.
Maybe this is a sign, too, that Hinch is prepared to use Cionel in some higher-leverage situations.

I don't think so. Peacock started tossing when it was still a tie game. With the big lead, I was half expecting Hinch to give the ball to Perez as he seems to be on the bottom of the totem pole right now.

Nice win. Glad to see the bats break out late. Hopefully the hits from Tucker and Springer get them going.

McCurry is trying to close out a three-hitter against Iowa. He's only given up 2 ER over his last 12+ innings. He may be getting to that point where he can pitch for the Astros in September.

After Marwin does the dumbest thing I've ever seen in that situation, we get big hits from Kemp and Tucker followed by a Springer dinger. Cole was great until he tired. A good win that it appeared we would not get. We go from the second inning until the 10th without a hit and then put six on the board. I still czn't believe Marwin did something that stupid.....but, I am sure he will be back in the lineup tomorrow.

Musgrove has maintained a 3.69 FIP and a 4.08 ERA this year. Not bad.

Who does Hinch trust in the pen?
After the game, he said:
"Joe Smith, Collin McHugh and Hector Rondon, that's the primary bullpen to come in for us and get some big outs."

No way did Hinch give him a sign to do that. I went back and looked at Marwin's successful squeeze bunt earlier this year. It was the July 8 game against Giolito and CWS. In that AB, Marwin bunted on an 0-2 count. It worked that time, so I guess in today's game he thought he would try it again.

If they go on a run and Yankees+Mariners fall, they can make the playoffs -- I'd give them a 15% chance of it. Winning the division would require a mathematical miracle, the odds of which I'd think would have to be under 1%. Fangrahs (as of today) has SEA making playoffs at 64%, while OAK at 34%. Winning divison? SEA 1.6% OAK 0.4% linkAnyone who buys those projections may want to consider the realty of what has been happening on the field over the past month. After last nights games Houston (67-36) leads the AL West by 5 games in the loss column over Seattle (60-41) and by 7 games in the loss column over Oakland (59-43). Seattle leads Oakland for second place in the division by 2 games in the loss column. After the games of June 24th were played Houston (52-27) led the AL West by 4 games in the loss column over Seattle (47-31) and by 11 games in the loss column over Oakland (40-38). Seattle led Oakland for second place in the division by 7 games in the loss column. In one month Oakland gained 4 games on Houston and 5 games on Seattle. Oakland gained 4 games on the Astros over the last month while Houston was playing a very weak schedule. Oakland is a very talented, hungry young team with a good manager. Oakland came back from a 10-0 deficit to win their game last night. There are a little over 2 months left in the regular season. There is no doubt in my mind that Oakland is going to finish ahead of Seattle in the standings at the end of this season. Anyone who has watched the way the Astros and Athletics have played over the last month and thinks that Houston has the AL West locked up because Oakland cannot make up 7 games in the loss column over the next 2+ months is fooling themselves.

The A's offense sure looked good in spring training but then didn't seem to live up to expectations in April - June. Over the past 30 days, in their good stretch, the A's have posted a wRC+ of 122 and that is with a very sustainable of BABIP of .301. Over the same period, the Astros have posted a wRC+ of 108 but the BABIP has been quite low at .269 so that suggests there has been an element of bad luck suppressing the overall offensive production. It's hard to see the A's pitching matching the Astros' this year, but offense is a different story. The two teams look to about be at parity. Fourth place in the division for the A's looked to be lower that what they deserve. If they finished second and got a wildcard spot, that would seem fitting.

Devenski pulled this same tank job last year, especially in the playoffs. And Will Harris needs to join Giles on the useless list.

He's had a rough July for sure, but the guy has been very good for us. I'm not going to hold one postseason against somebody. If we did that, Ted Williams wouldn't be in the HoF.

Along with Harris and Giles, Devenski was also garbage in last year's playoffs. The only way I would use him is if we had at least a 4 run lead. Right now, he and Harris throw BP to the opposition. I'd get rid of Harris.
