Gattis is a waste of a roster spot... his spot should go to Stassi so the team can carry 3 catchers into the playoffs. Reddick would be the primary OF replacement. That would give a roster of 13 position players and 12 pitches. If Hinch goes with a 14/11 split like he did in last year's ALDS, he could carry Fisher or Straw to be used strictly as a pinch runner. Is Straw even eligible to be on a playoff roster? He was not on the 40-man roster until after August 31? “Definition Per Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, players must meet certain criteria in order to be eligible for postseason play. Players must be on the 40-man roster, the 60-day disabled list or the bereavement/family medical emergency list as of midnight ET on Aug. 31 to be eligible for their respective clubs' postseason rosters. Consequently, players that are acquired via September trades or signed as free agents in September are ineligible for postseason play. Clubs can petition the Commissioner's Office to add any player that was not on the 40-man roster as of Aug. 31 -- provided the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing a player who has spent at least 60 days on the 60-day disabled list.” Straw was not added to the 40-man roster until 9/15. The only player that I’m aware of who is on the 60-day DL is Gustave and he was moved to the 60-day DL on 9/15. I am assuming that where the rule states “...and is replacing a player who has spent at least 60 days on the 60-day disabled list,” it means 60 days during the current season. Gustave was on the 60-day DL from June 14, 2017 to November 6, 2017, but was then transferred to the 10-day DL and did not go back on the 60-day DL until 9/15/2018. Unless I’m missing something, I don’t see how Straw could be eligible to be on a playoff roster this year.

I guess that they can petition to get Straw on the roster if Reddick goes on the dl and is deemed his replacement.

I really don't understand the ins and outs of the eligibility rules. I used to think I did -- that a player had to be on the active roster as of August 31 to be eligible for the postseason.
However in recent years, the trend has been towards finding ways to get almost anyone in the organization's system as of August 31 in there somehow.
I would think that Fisher would have priority over Straw. Fisher has been in the WS limelight to some extent already, is fast, and likes to run with Bregman at the plate.
Straw is more of an unknown quantity but my word is he fast.

So, Straw is essentially the replacement for Maybin?

Straw is more of an unknown quantity but my word is he fast. I’m not sure I understand everything I know about the post season roster eligibility rules either. Now.., Gustave has spent more than 60 days on the 60-day DL since last he was active..., which was prior to June 14, 2017. Does that mean the team can petition the league to allow Straw in lieu of Gustave on the 40-man roster for post season eligibility purposes, or does Gustave’s required 60 days on the 60-Day DL have to be within this season? As far as Straw being an injury replacement for Reddick..., doesn’t a player have to first be on a postseason roster and then be injured before a injury replacement can be added to the postseason roster? One would think that if Hinch/Luhnow has intended that Straw be eligible to be on the post season roster, they would have gone ahead and transferred Gustave to the 60-Day DL prior to August 31 and added Straw to the 40-man roster then, rather than waiting to September 15.

If I had to choose between Fisher and Straw, I would take Straw. Straw is as fast, if not faster, than Fisher. In spite of Fisher’s speed, he really is not that good a base stealer. Straw is a better base stealer. Straw doesn’t strike out 50% of the time. Straw is a better outfielder who has a strong, accurate arm as opposed to Fisher who has a noodle arm.
