Anytime I see good numbers for a young left-handed pitcher who I have never heard of, I always check into the player’s background more closely. When I saw the 5 K, 0 BB in 3.1 innings by Parker Mushinski I went to his player page to find out a little about him. He was picked in the 7th round of the draft last June. In 30 innings pitched at Short Season A Tri-City last season he walked 19 and hit 4 batters. Apparently his 3.1 IP yesterday without walking a batter was quite an accomplishment for him....he did; however, hit one batter. Gotta keep ‘em on their toes.

I still think Reed is a Justin Smoak kind of prospect. He needs to get some discipline and trim another 20 lbs of jelly off that frame of his and he might develop into something. They were making a big deal of his off season weight loss and he definitely looked better but he still does not look like a professional athlete. I am pulling for him, hate for us to have two #1 first base prospects go up in flames. I thought I was alone on Reed...he sure makes it hard to be a supporter. Let's hope he stays on that regime that allowed him to lose the weight. He seemed to be upset that he did not get called up last year like he was entitled or something. Maybe not calling him up will wake his but up and get him dedicated to his craft.

Mushinski has always had good stuff but no control. They talked about his inability to control his stuff and their ability to fix him. Hope they do. Now Bukauskus, his performance last night was not good. Hope that it was a one off kind of thing.

I’m wondering how long the FO will put up with the Chris Nunn show before that Rule 5 pick is sent packing.

That was torture with all the ads...you watch a 5-7 clip on a player...he hits a HR, or double, and then right back to 15 Cabela's ad....and then rinse and repeat.

Less than 2 months till we add to the farm. I saw one mock draft had us taking some 6'11" pitcher from Kentucky.

In tonight's Grizzlies game, Ted has already executed a successful sac bunt to get Tony Kemp from 2nd to 3rd. Kemp was then singled in by Tyler White for the RBI. A Ted who can both be a HR threat and play small ball is going to be dangerous.

Hmm.., I wonder what the story is with Nick Hernandez. I just checked the rosters of all the Astros minor league affiliates and his name still doesn’t appear on any roster. Baseball Reference doesn’t show him assigned to any minor league team this year either.

Tyler White continues to hit like he's ready to come up and take Gattis's place as primary DH. A solo HR, a single, and a walk last night and *no strikeouts*. It's not only tonight either. this season he's only struck out 4 times in 34 ABs (half of Reed's K% rate). In 2015-2017, White maintained about a 24% strikeout rate which held constant regardless of whether he was in the minor or major leagues. If he's really found a way to cut back on the K's, that would be a career changer for him.
White with a 1.038 OPS now for the Grizz, which is second only to Drew Ferguson's production. (Well there's Tim Federowicz too but he hasn't batted very much yet.)
The Astros have the talent to be getting more hits at the major league level but it will require saying goodbye to some familiar faces like those of Gattis and Marisnick.

Brendan McCurry, too, continues to pitch well. Probably he and Guduan have done the best jobs so far out of the pen for the Grizzlies. I could see McCurry being part of the postseason team. If the cost of a Britton/Herrera/Watson or similar pitcher is too high, McCurry could be an affordable internal option.

Imagine an outfield with Tucker in right, Springer in center, and Alvarez in left. That is most likely the starting outfield for 2020. If we can convince Springer to stay then after that for another 5 years as well.

McCurry is definitely forcing himself into the conversation. I was just trying to think of how long McCurry has been looking good on the mound. He really kicked it off in July last year, after struggling for the first six weeks or so following his suspension. And he's really not looked back since. So that's 3 months at AAA last year (July, August, September), plus a month of spring training and nearly another month of regular season AAA ball this year... basically five months straight now in which McCurry has dominated.

Also don't go to sleep on Quintana the catcher in CC. That I think is a signing that was really quiet at the time will pay off big by the end of next year.
