Tyler White now has 5 HRs in 52 ABs and an OPS of 1.083 for Fresno. Only Drew Ferguson has performed better over a similar number of plate appearances, although JD Davis and Tim Federowicz have also looked good in their more limited time at the plate.
I'm wondering how many HRs White can hit this year. I always thought he was good for 25 HRs if he could be given 600 PAs in a season. But he's already 20% of the way to that goal and the season's only 12% over.

White is doing well. Tucker not so much. He is down to a 235 average. One 4 hit game though this early could fix that.

I don’t know if you all have noticed or not, but the pitchers on our Class A Advanved Buies Creek team have been on a roll lately. Over the last 5 games they have thrown 4 shutouts. 2 of those shutouts were 1 hitters. They have given up a total of just 12 hits over the last 5 games.

White is doing well. Tucker not so much. He is down to a 235 average. One 4 hit game though this early could fix that. Some of us have discussed minor leaguers who could eventually compete for the utility inf/of role with the Astros. One name we might want to add to that list is Nick Tanielu of the Corpus Christi Hooks. He is 25 years old. He has done well at each level in the minors so far and is off to a hot start this year. The Astros thought enough of him last season that they made him one of the guys they sent to the Arizona Fall League, but he got injured after playing in just 2 games and missed the rest of the AFL season. He has played 1B, 2B and 3B in the minor leagues. We might want to keep an eye on this guy.

“What is the story on Justin Ferrell” — Thomas
He’s 6’ 7” tall and weighs 205. 23 years old. Was drafted in the 36th round 2014. Spent time on the DL in 2015 and 2016. Spent the season with Class A Quad Cities in 2015 and 2016. Had a 4.74 ERA and .226 BAA in 2016. Spent 2017 with Class A Advanced Buies Creek. Had a 4.26 ERA and .259 BAA in 2017. He is repeating Class A Advanced this year and is off to a good start. Has pitched 11 innings, struck out 11, walked 2 and allowed just 3 hits and no earned runs..., and has allowed a BAA of just .086 so far. Looks like a flyball pitcher because his career GO/AO ratio is 0.69 and is 0.62 so far this year. His RHB vs LHB splits are not a problem. Numbers vs lefties and righties are very similar. As far as I can tell he is not related to Riley.

He turns 24 years old on April 21st. He is in his second year at A Advanced and competing against players who are on average not quite a year younger than him. I don’t know how much, if any, that factors into the success he is having so far this year. If he keeps pitching like he has so far, he should be promoted to AA by mid-season. I’m curious to see how he handles the adjustment to AA.

Well, Tucker isn’t doing himself any favors. It’s disappointing considering he led the majors in RBI during ST.

It's strange these days that it's almost hard to find good hitting LFers and 1B. It used to seem like they were everywhere.

Our guys will come around or we can trade for another bat in June/July. It should not cost much then if we even need one. If Marisnick and Fisher keep striking out at a 50% rate we need to send them down for some rehab work and let one of the other guys have a chance.

Straw has always had a great ob%. If he ever develops just a little pop, watch out. He sure seems to have the rest of it figured out. Some of us have suggested that maybe the batting coach could work with Straw on his swing in order that he could get more loft on the ball and produce some home runs. I just looked at his stats and it looks like maybe he has adjusted his swing. His career GO/AO ratio is 1.94. The lowest GO/AO ratio he has posted in any one season is 1.68. I know it is a small sample, but so far this year his ratio is 0.70

He obviously has the physical talents to play and he is demonstrating the willingness to learn to be better. Good sign. You always bring up good stats/proof to your points. I commend you sir for what that is worth.

Before, it made more sense to need Marisnick with the wide expanses that needed coverage at MMP. Now that Tal’s Hill is gone, do we really need such a poor hitter to be starting ever?
I can’t see why guys Kemp, Davis, or a guy like Straw should be denied an opportunity whilst Jake flails away at pitch after pitch on nearly a daily basis.

I am getting excited again about the idea of Garrett Stubbs being our catcher of the future. I had begun to doubt him after he struggled last season at AA and AAA. He is playing good defense and hitting too. So far he has thrown out 4 of the 6 runners attempting to steal this year. For his minor league career he has thrown out 45% of runners attempting to steal. He has stolen 2 bases in 2 attempts himself. Right now he is on a 5 game hitting streak in which he is 10-22. If he can keep this up for the rest of the year, he should compete for a spot on the ML team next season.
