This is the role Jake should be used for. Even in that role, he struck out in his only AB. I hate to see a player struggle like Jake, but he even had trouble putting down a bunt the other day. He is at the point mentally thinking when will he ever get his next hit.

Has anyone heard what the story is on Bukauskus? He made the one start for Quad Cities and now he is not on their roster. He is listed on the roster of our Short Season A team Tri-City Valley Cats now.

Not sure but the talent level on the Quad Cities roster was weak with him. He must be having some discomfort or something and giving him some time. That really is the only thing that makes sense.

After going 0-8 in the first 2 games of the season, Tony Kemp has hits in 13 of the last 14 games. He is 23-56, .BA 411, in those 14 games. In the last 10 games he is 18-40, BA .450. He has struck out 9 times and walked 14 times in 64 at-bats this season. He was promoted to AAA in 2015 and played 71 games at that level, batting .273. He split both the 2016 and 2017 seasons between AAA and MLB, batting .306 at AAA in 2016 and .329 in 2017. He got 120 at-bats in MLB in 2016 and 37 at-bats in MLB in 2017 and batted just .217 in that limited exposure to the big leagues. I would like to see what he could do if he was called up to replace Marisnick and given the playing time Jake has been given. He has nothing left to prove at AAA. He has paid his dues in the minors. He deserves a legitimate shot in the majors.

Luhnow has surpassed Hunsicker as my favorite Astro's GM...he probably did last year with the Verlander move, but now with Morton and Cole dominating (with Strom's guidance), I just marvel at his ability to draft, sign or trade for talent.

Stassi and Stubbs are both good to excellent defensive catchers. If Stassi can maintain his career MLB numbers with the bat..., BA .269, OPS .798..., and Stubbs can at least match those numbers, they would seem to make a good platoon at the position after this season.

|
Post by olpapa on Apr 22, 2018 7:36:03 GMT -6
I just checked Stassi’s and Stubbs’ splits for the season. So far Stassi is batting .385 vs lefties and Stubbs is batting .385 vs righties.

Post by olpapa on Apr 22, 2018 7:50:44 GMT -6
Actually, looking at the career platoon splits for both Stassi and Stubbs, neither guy has shown a significant difference in their overall numbers against righties vs lefties and vice versa over the course of their career.

Kemp, Davis, White, Straw, Stubbs, and Tucker, that is a lot of talent that is ml ready or almost ml ready. Somebody has some tough decisions to make. For sure. Looking ahead to next season.., I could easily see McCann, Gattis, Marisnick and Marwin gone. If Fisher doesn’t prove that he can hit ML pitching consistently by the end of this season, he could be back in the minors. If Fisher does prove that he can hit ML pitching by the end of this season and Tucker is ready for MLB by the end of this season, I could see Fisher traded before next season. If both Fisher and Tucker prove capable of raking in MLB, I just can’t see either guy as a 4th outfielder going forward. Seems like a waste. All that said, Stubbs could slide into the catchers position vacated by McCann. Tucker could take over in LF. Straw could be your 4th outfielder to replace Marisnick. White, Davis and Kemp could compete for the DH/Utility roles to replace Gattis and Marwin. That still leaves one of those guys without a spot on the ML roster, unless the team decides to go with a 12-man pitching staff. Davis’ ability to pitch might factor into that decision.

That leaves just enough to sign Verlander/Cole to a 3 year 63 million dollar deal.

I thank Jesus daily that Saint isn’t in charge of making player evaluations for the Houston Astros baseball club. What am I missing with Kemp's .593 career OPS? Perhaps what was missed with JD back in the day. I think the point is that if all we are looking for from Marisnick is speed on the bases and good defense then Kemp can get you there and still has potential upside.
