Hard to believe there’s not something out of the ordinary going on. The guy hit .361 in April and .367 in May at AA and then .355 in June at AAA. Then he hit .209 in July and so far in August he is batting .213. How do you explain a guy dropping from a .350+ hitter from April-June to a slightly above the Mendoza line hitter in July and August, if the guy isn’t playing with an injury? I haven’t seen any reports of him being injured. Someone needs to ask Luhnow to come clean on Strraw. A good comparison to Straw’s situation might be Tyler White. We do know for a fact that, after Tyler arrived in MLB, the team DID make adjustments to his swing in order to get him to get more loft on the ball and produce home runs more frequently. In his first 3 seasons in the minors White batted .322 in 2013, .290 in 2014 and .325 in 2015. In those 3 seasons White hit 35 home runs in 1,031 at-bats.... one home run every 29.46 at-bats. In 2015 at AAA he batted .362 and hit 7 home runs in 213 at-bats....one home run every 30.42 at-bats. White started the 2016 season with the Astros before being sent down to AAA. It was while he was with Houston in 2016 that it was reported that the team was working with White to get him to adjust his swing and uppercut the ball more in order to produce more home runs. In his time at AAA in 2016 White hit 13 home runs in 174 at-bats....one home run every 13.38 at-bats, but his batting average dropped to .241 from the .362 he hit at AAA the previous season. In 2017 at AAA White hit 25 home runs in 436 at-bats....one home run every 17.44 at-bats.....and he raised his batting average from the .241 he hit in 2016 up to .300. In 2018 at AAA White hit 14 home runs in 255 at-bats....one home run every 18.21 at-bats and he raised his batting average from the .300 he hit in 2017 up to .333. It is pretty obvious that Tyler White’s batting average suffered as he was making the adjustment to his swing that increased his home run production. He went from a .362 hitter at AAA in 2015 to a .241 hitter in 2016, to a .300 hitter in 2017 to a .333 hitter in 2018 as he adjusted to his new swing and became accustomed to it. Straw was roughly a .360 hitter from April - June this season. He has been roughly a .210 hitter in July - August. He hasn’t hit a single home run at AAA and only had one at AA from April - early June before he was promoted. If they are jacking with his swing trying to get more home runs out of him, it obviously isn’t working yet. Maybe it will work eventually, he will hit home runs and he will, like White, recover his ability to hit for average. Maybe not.

When everyone is a cookie cutter hitter then eventually the league catches up and slows down your production. If you have power that is great but the pitchers can adjust, if you have speed the defense can adjust and catch up to you, if you have a diversified lineup it is hard to adjust and keep all the small details in your mind so you work the hell out of your opponent. I am all for leaving Straw the hell alone and let him draw a 100 walks and get 140 singles and 40 doubles and 80 steals on the year. It sure as hell would cut down on the dps. And by the way his defense ain't too shabby either.

We both know that Springer will be the Astros leadoff hitter as long as he is with the team and the clipboard rules. Straw cannot hit the long ball. The Astros obviously place no value in a .300+ BA, .400+ OBP, 50+ steals per year player who can play all 3 outfield positions well and throw out runners who attempt to take the extra base on him, if he can’t hit the long ball. I predict that the team will not be able to convert Straw to a power hitter and that he will be traded NLT the offseason after the 2019 season.

Question: If AJ Reed spends the rest of his career in the minors, will he beat Crash Davis' HR record? I don’t know about that, but if I recall correctly he recently moved into #3 all-time in career home runs by a Fresno franchise player (includes all players that have played for Fresno, regardless of which major league team that Fresno was affiliated with at the time). I don’t know if that is really something for him to brag to the grandkids about some day since it means he was with that minor league team a long time without earning a spot on the major league team.

Straw is an outlier and should be embraced for what he is instead of trying to force a square peg into a round hole.

Straw is showing signs of life. He is batting .310 (13-42) with more walks (7) than strikeouts (6) and has stolen 5 bases. His 67 stolen bases leads all of professional baseball. He has been caught stealing just 8 times.

Alvarez is slowing bringing up his average. Martin seems tired. I was just looking at Alvarez’s platoon split numbers. As you know, he is a lefthanded batter. Since his promotion to AAA he is hitting lefties (.327) about .100 higher than righties (.234). I pulled up his numbers at AA this year and same thing..., .396 vs lefties and .293 vs righties. So I pulled up his numbers at High A in 2017...same thing..., .364 vs lefties and .241 vs righties. I found that a bit odd. I don’t know if it is a good thing or a bad thing.

there are a lot more right handed pitchers, so if he can not work that out it will become a very bad thing.
