there are a lot more right handed pitchers, so if he can not work that out it will become a very bad thing. Alvarez better learn to hit righties if he wants any playing time at all once he gets to Houston. The clipboard says to sit lefty batters against lefty pitchers and the clipboard rules.

I think Deetz will be given every opportunity to make the team in ST next year. Scheetz is an interesting prospect. He went undrafted out of Virginia Tech in 2017 and Luhnow signed him as a FA. He made it to AA in one year and has done well at AA. From what I have heard, the adjustment to AA is the big one that eliminates most of the wannabes. One thing I have noticed about Scheetz that impresses me is that he doesn’t walk many....especially for a lefty. He is averaging about one walk per 5 IP at AA.

Lots of possible turnover in our pitching ranks so it is good planning that so many options exist.

If it were me I would try to sign both and see which one of the two I could get then I would do the same thing next year. That way they are not replacing their entire starting rotation over the next 18 months.

Keuchel was the poster boy of Luhnow’s “low velo” ideal. I guess a shift away from that philosophy has occurred.

Don’t know how I missed this, but Whitley was placed on the 10-day DL effective 8-25:
“By Chris Tripodi / MiLB.com | August 28, 2018 7:11 PM
A potential breakout season for Forrest Whitley has officially turned into a lost campaign for the Astros' prized right-hander.
MLB.com's No. 7 overall prospect was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a lat strain after he was scratched from his last start due to discomfort in his lat. With the Texas League season ending next week, Whitley finished with an 0-2 record and a 3.76 ERA in eight starts for Double-A Corpus Christi.”
What a lost year for the kid. First the 50-game suspension, then the DL time for the oblique and now a lat strain. Whitley was placed on the DL on August 28 retroactive to August 25. On August 30 he was named as one of the Astros prospects who will participate in the Arizona Fall League. Hopefully he will get healthy in time to get some work in the AFL and salvage something for the season.

First the 50-game suspension, then the DL time for the oblique and now a lat strain. This year has been a real mess for Forrest and for the Astros. They had him penciled in to take a spot next year after getting some late season time with the big boys this year. Now he will finish the year with only 30 innings plus whatever he can get in the fall league. Even if that is another 30 then the most they can stretch him out next year would be to 110 innings and then 160 in 2020. Missing these last few starts and not getting the exposure up at the major league level will impact him for the next two years as a minimum. Bad luck

I see that Brady Rodgers is scheduled to start game one of the playoffs for Fresno and Trent Thrnton game two. Hopefully Rodgers can build on his last two starts for Fresno. His future with the Astros organization may depend on how he finishes up in the playoffs.

Looks like James and Valdez are slotted to replace Keuchel and Morton. I wonder what that means for guys like Perez and Armenteros. Deetz looks like a replacement for Harris. Lots of possible turnover in our pitching ranks so it is good planning that so many options exist. Perez will probably get a shot at replacing Sipp. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Armenteros traded, if the right deal comes along this offseason. He has nothing left to prove in the minors. Could have been in the starting rotation for a lot of major league teams this year. Now it appears James has passed him up and the group of Martin, Bielak, Whitley, Hartman and Bukauskus is right on his heels. All of those guys will likely be in AAA by the end of next season.

If you think about the fact that our entire rotation is going to potentially turn over in the next 18 months, and the fact that the success rate for starting pitcher prospects is only about 40% for guys rated in the top 100, then it is safe to estimate that of the group of guys listed above only 3 will become successful long term starters in the major leagues. So as you look to stack the prospects and look how it most likely will flow we need to sign either Keuchel or Morton after this year and either Cole or Verlander after next year. My guess is that we will target Morton and Cole and that is only a guess.
