Nice report in Fangraphs today about prospect RHP Josh James, currently at Corpus Christi:
"Josh James, RHP, Houston (Profile) For the second straight week, James appears among the Five proper — largely because of how, for the second straight week, he looked something close to invincible on the mound. In his second start and third overall appearance of the season, the right-hander faced Seattle’s Double-A affiliate, recording a 7:0 strikeout-to-walk ratio against 19 batters over 5.0 innings (box). James has now produced the third-best strikeout- and walk-rate differential among all the minor leagues’ 450 qualified pitchers.
His success thus far appears to be due, in no small part, to improved arm speed. According to human reggaeton horn Kiley McDaniel, James has been “up to 98 [and] has had a big velo jump each of the last two years.” Beyond that newfound velocity, James seemed to have some modest success with his changeup, as well — a pitch that didn’t appear (to this author’s admittedly unqualified eye) to figure as prominently in his first start."

Tyler White is looking hot enough and consistent enough to replace Evan Gattis *now*.

If my memory serves me correctly, Josh James was ranked in the Astros Top 30 Prospects by MLB.com at some point early in the 2016 season when he was at A Advavnced Lancaster. I don’t know if he can maintain the pace he is pitching at now, but what stands out to me in his numbers right now is the 2 walks in 13 innings pitched. In past years he has averaged walking between 3-4 batters per nine innings. His strikeout rate is up too. He was averaging a little over a strikeout per inning pitched coming into this year. BTW 240, I just noticed that Nick Hernandez has finally been listed on the Corpus Christi roster. He is on the 7-day DL.

Myles Straw did not get a hit in yesterday’s game, but he got on base an a fielder’s choice and stole his 12th base of the year. He also drove in a run with a sac fly.
Although he still doesn’t have a home run this year, his GO/AO ratio is holding at 0.80 which is 1.04 below his 1.84 from last season. I’m thinking he HAS adjusted his swing to try and get more loft on the ball and in so doing, produce some home runs. The good news is that any adjustment he has made to his swing has apparently not affected his ability to hit for average as he is batting .379 right now.

I saw that STraw was named to the MLB.com Pipeline Team, sort of an All-Star Team of promising prospects. I like this idea of having several potential MLB outfielders (Tucker, Ferguson, Alvarez, Straw, Kemmer). Crazy things and not-so-crazy things happen (trades, free agency, injuries, unexpected drop-off in performance) so it's good to be prepared for all contingencies.

I think Straw will make it to the bigs and could be our answer in CF if we do not manage to keep Springer. He will never hit for the power that Springer does but he gets on base at a crazy rate and that usually translates to the bigs although obviously at a reduced rate. I am a fan. If he gets more power through the swing adjustment or just maturation, either way it would be the filler for the one tool he has not demonstrated to date.

It’s so frustrating to see Kemp hit AAA pitchers like a piñata only to look lost in the majors. I think its partly the old PCL thingy. MLB teams must use some kind of adjusted matrix in evaluating talent statistic wise.

Straw just keeps hitting. Also, Ronnie Dawson has turned it around since his ice cold start to the season.

Corpus Christi should be in good shape to make a run at the Texas League championship. They are in first place in the South Division now and Whitley hasn’t pitched a game for them yet due to his suspension. Buies Creek is leading their division in the Carolina League. Once the organization promotes deserving players from Buies Creek later this season, the Hooks should be really tough.
If I recall correctly Corpus Christi was out front in the Texas League last season until Armenteros, JD Davis, Drew Ferguson, Jack Mayfield and Garrett Stubbs all got promoted to AAA in the second half of the season. After losing those guys, the team wilted. This year maybe they will get stronger in the second half.
