What would be your thoughts on the Astros signing Goldschmidt next offseason?

The Astros have a load of quality young pitchers who have either already debuted at the ML level or are projected to debut by 2020:
Josh James, Cionel Perez, Framber Valdez, Forrest Whitley (2019), Corbin Martin (2020), J.B. Bukauskus (2020), Brandon Bielak (2020). Then there’s Dean Deetz and Armenteros who were projected to debut in 2018. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Deetz on the OD roster... maybe Armenteros too.
That said, there aren’t nearly as many top prospects among the position players. Tucker should be a starter for the Astros next season. Yordan Alvarez projected to debut in 2020. Stubbs should get a shot at making the OD roster. Straw may too.

I wonder if Luhnow will find a team to take Reed off his hands in the offseason. Wouldn’t be surprised if Fisher is dealt.

What would be your thoughts on the Astros signing Goldschmidt next offseason? It's all about contract length and money. I don't think anybody would turn down signing him, but we do have money tied up in Altuve, and should have money tied up in Springer and Bregman pretty soon. If money was no object, absolutely sign him. And as much as I hope our pitching prospects pan out, I have a lot of concerns after next offseason. I think we would be wise to look at a FA starter or two next offseason.

If they go after catching, I hope they go after a catcher that can hold his own as a DH too.
I wonder what kind of deal Patrick Corbin is looking for...

Seems as if a lot of injuries may have been mishandled. Since Altuve and McCullers may both need surgery, the sooner they know and get it done, the better. Morton's shoulder issues also may be unresolved. The health of these three should be a top priority. I think Hinch was kind of forced to play these guys to help the team repeat a league title to their detriment. It’s kind of unfortunate. I'd offer Keuchel 2 years at $30 million plus incentives. If Boras turns it down, tell them to hit the road. The only two Astros free agents that we should concentrate on re-signing are Marwin Gonzalez and Charlie Morton.

I don't think he will, either. I also don't think I'd offer more than that. He thinks he's worth a lot more than he is........A soft-toss pitcher who has to rely on pinpoint location to have a chance to win. How many times this season did we start off in a 3-0 hole or worse after the first inning of one of his starts? Good riddance to Keuchel if he wants more than a 2 year deal.

You didn't think White put up effective numbers this year? He is okay but is nothing amazing. The tailoff at the end of the season worries me a little. He’s more consistent than Gattis, but I’d like to see more from him to feel as if he definitely should be the DH.

It doesn't matter what Keuchel thinks he's worth; it matters what teams that need starting pitching think he's worth. And pitchers that put up numbers they way he did this year (and still with potential for much better numbers) normally get way better than 2-year $30 million deals.
He seems more pedestrian than he is because we already have two #1 caliber pitchers. Most teams can't boast that. He's a very effective #2-3 for most teams, with a chance still to be a #1 (look at last year before his injury).
Most Astros fans are down on Keuchel because he hasn't repeated his CY performance from 2015. Most other teams/fans see a pitcher that is still very effective, including in the postseason this year. Also, since he isn't a guy that relies on velocity, he can have success even as he ages. (Especially considering he showed to be completely healthy again this year.)

If .276/.354/.533 is only "okay" to you, I don't know what type of production you think we're going to get without paying a ton or giving up a ton.... Those are similar rates to what he did in 2017 and the first month of 2016 before he hit his slump. I think he's capable of maintaining slash rates of .275/.330/.520 (.850 OPS) from the DH spot . That would be a big improvement over Gattis. Add in a better-hitting catcher and bounce back seasons from Altuve, Correa, and Reddick.....now you're talking.

Like I’ve said before, when you established a couple sub-3 ERA seasons and a Cy Young reception, you’ve set the bar at a level where fans expect a little something extra from you. These aren’t unfair expectations. No one is asking him to win a Triple Crown, but not many are also saying he should get a little bit of a pass for Verlander and Cole doing so well by comparison. He is a good pitcher, but he isn’t worth a long term monetary commitment for most teams. In fact, outside of the top five payroll teams, I don’t think he’s worth it. Patrick Corbin is a much better lefty SP.

His overall numbers are great, but what they need is consistency. This is to a lesser extent what we also saw from Giles last year - great overall numbers but MIA in the postseason. White is a good DH if they can’t find anyone better.

When 3 out of your last 5 seasons are ERAs under 3.00 (including just last year), you're normally pretty damn good. The guy had a shitty May back in 2016 or else you're looking at 5 above-average seasons in a row with pretty good overall health AND proven success in the postseason. If fans expect more than that.....unreasonable expectations maybe. You make it sound like if Altuve doesn't play like an MVP the next few seasons (but still all-star caliber) that he's not performing well enough....

Altuve has earned his keep. He does the best he can with competition like Trout, Betts, and Martinez. Keuchel is more forgettable. He’s good but not someone that GM’s would likely trip over themselves to get a chance at acquiring him.

"Use the money we would give Keuchel on other positions." I agree with that part. But making it sound like teams would be foolish to pay him more than $30 million isn't being fair to how good he has been the last 5 years.
