We have all been puzzling over what Luhnow has on his mind about the starting rotation. Everyone in baseball seems to think that the Astros are in dire need of a starter except, that is, Luhnow. So what in the world does he know that we do not. So I asked myself what could that possibly be and then yesterday we hear about Smith's injury and another pitching hole gets created and yet still nothing, not really any static out there in gossip land about anything other than unconfirmed rumors. So what is it, then boom, there it was a different kind of idea that may just be what he is up to. Think about this, we have Whitley, James, Perez, Valdez, Martin, Armenteros, and Bukauskas all ready or really close to being ready to pitch in the majors. All of these guys have a complete package of options where they can be brought up and then sent back down without repercussion. Whitley, Martin, and Bukauskas though are not on the 40 man roster and to do this they would have to be added and the roster currently has 39 players on it. Martes, Smith, and Rodgers are on the 40 man as well and Martes and Smith could be put on the 60 day disabled list and Rodgers could be cut to make room to implement this strategy. Also some of these guys will be limited in the amount of innings that they can pitch so a 3 or 4 inning limit and pitch counts would have to be used in a piggyback arrangement with two of these guys at a time taking their turn in the arena. Basically that would make the fifth starter slot a rotating open audition slot for these guys. James and Valdez kind of did this last year and had success so why not expand it. If our offense is strong enough we might find ourselves having to outscore our opponents from time to time every fifth day but if the offense is strong enough, why not, this way we do not give away prospects and we have a chance to really see what all that vaulted depth can actually do. Not saying I agree with this but it does make sense and is just far enough out of the box to be something that Luhnow would consider. If we do not find a trade that we like I would not put this out of the range of the options that are penciled in. Luhnow's MO tends to be if he is trying to trade for a starting pitcher with a club-friendly contract, we would've seen in the news reports who the target is by now. Everyone seems to be in agreement this is what needs to be done, but there's no consensus on who the pitcher should beI agree there isn't an easy match up right now except Grienke and we all know that the dollars are holding up a deal there.

Any loss from the Red Sox is the Astros’ gain. I doubt Kimbrel stays. I don’t think the deal is that bad either. You'd pay a relief pitcher with a career 3.87 ERA coming off a year with a 4+ ERA $25 million for three seasons, but Keuchel throwing 200 IP and a sub-4 ERA is not worth bringing back? It’s not $25 million a year, is it?

There management just wants to spend. They dont care about money. They got money to burn I don’t really get the trade. Kemp is a fading injury prone former star. Puig and Bailey are rentals. Wood is a decent back end starter.

This may be old news, but found this encouraging sign concerning the Astros pursuit of Realmuto:
“Craig Mish Craig Mish @craigmish · Dec 20 The daily Realmuto : Sources : Astros are not offering Tucker. Braves still in. Rays, Reds, Padres would all need to up the ante to get serious. Could go into 2019 with J.T. on MIA. Would not surprise me if some other team got involved.”

If I’m understanding what he is saying, the Rays, Reds and Padres offers are inferior to the Astros offer in spite of the fact that Luhnow is not offering Tucker.

Theres two more post about this. It seems like a Yordan Alveraz, J.B.Bukouskas, and a bunch of MLB ready goes. But the deal could be extended to get Urena and Brenson

I'll say this if the Dodgers can move that kinda money and contracts to the Redd then there is a trade out there for Josh Reddick.

The Astros are currently fourth in projected 2019 team WAR at 49.5. BoSox lead the pack at 50.8.
If the Astros add Realmuto, that should put them on top of this list.
Overall these lists don't mean much but then again there's not much to do baseball-wise this time of year, so it's sort of fun to look at them and dream of what the Astros may accomplish in October 2019.

Offense will not matter if we have our current pitching staff. We must add someone. That is a necessity.

Reed, Fisher, Davis, Kemp, Stassi, Marisnick, Armenteros, to name a few.
