Harper is a great offensive player, but like you’ve said, the Astros have too many fish to fry when it comes to maintaining their success i.e. paying their players. Yup. I think Springer deserves an extension right now. Something like 5-years $90-100 million. See if he would take that rather than exploring free agency as an almost 30-year old next offseason. Seeing as he’s our must clutch playoff performer, I’d say he’s earned it.

Miguel Cabrera's contract is likely going to end up worse than Pujols or Harper's...
In the end, it's also completely possible that Harper remains productive offensively throughout the contract. Look at how well Nelson Cruz and Encarnacion are still performing. The problem will be that his defense will likely be atrocious by the time he is 34-35 which will greatly hinder his value to a NL team. If he can perform at an MVP-caliber level for a few years and then still hit as well as those guys the last few years, I think Philly will be pretty damn pleased though. Especially if they can win a World Series or two.
They're lineup is going to be very good now if their 2018 numbers remain similar.
Hernandez 2B (.356 OBP 15 HR) Segura SS (112 OPS+ 10 HR) Harper RF (133 OPS+ 34 HR) Hoskins 1B (125 OPS+ 34 HR) Realmuto C (131 OPS+ 21 HR) McCutchen LF (118 OPS+ 20 HR) Franco 3B (106 OPS+ 22 HR) Herrera CF (94 OPS+ 22 HR)
They spent a lot of money and traded some good prospects, but that lineup is going to be right up there with the best in the NL if they stay healthy. They're still lacking some pitching, but they have a bonafide ace in Nola and a solid veteran with Arrieta.

And Prince Fielder. And that pitcher in AZ (before Grienke). And Mike Hampton.

What are some notable long-term deals that DID turn out worthwhile?
Even though I don't care for the guy then or now, A-Rod's initial deal with the Rangers had him end up being very productive during the length of the contract. Unfortunately it didn't do them any good which is why they traded him.

His reads out in center can be questionable, which culminated in the horrible diving play on Bellinger (Game 5, WS). Optimally, they should move Brantley to 1B or DH and put Tucker and Straw respectively in LF and CF.

I would only offer 5 if we had opt outs on the last two and he had to move outta CF. 15per is fair aswell Let's see using the "magic formula." Average WAR over the last 3 seasons is 4.3 WAR/yr times $6M/WAR equals $25.8M/yr.
Using a 3.5 WAR average over the last 5 years brings us to $21M/yr.
We won't get him for less than $20M/yr unless it is a long term guaranteed contract.

I still think Greinke is a Luhnow style move. Arizona will not be in contention before his contract expires and we could pick it up with three years left making this season dynamic and having a veteran ace to help the kids in 20 and 21. We probably wouldn't get much back in salary relief since Greinke is still piching up to his numbers, but it shouldn't cost us too much in prospects either at that salary. But it takes two to tango. But that's a Luhnow type deal.
Why would Arizona do this? Greinke actually slows down a rebuilding process because he's so good on a poor team that he keeps them near .500 all most by himself. It cost them higher draft picks as well a salary drain at a time they aren't competitive for the playoffs. They are also risking losing value with a single less than spectacular season which would make him less tradeable.
It is SPECULATION on my part and I haven't heard a peep that it's even been considered or suggested by the people that count. But it wouldn't surprise me.
Here is something we can agree on.......Grienke would be a great addition and is just the kind of deal Luhnow would make.

Good thing we didn't go after Salvador Perez. He might have a UCL tear. KC is now getting desperate and talking to Maldonado as a possible stop gap. He may end up avoiding a minor league contract.

Miguel Cabrera's contract is likely going to end up worse than Pujols or Harper's... Too early to tell whether Harper's contract will be bad. It only takes him through his 38 y/o season. Pujol's contract is definitely bad. Miggy might have some gas left in the tank, if he's healthy more often than not. But I don't think he has another MVP season in him. And Prince Fielder. And that pitcher in AZ (before Grienke). And Mike Hampton. We paid $30 million to shed ourselves of the RTWSA*. That was money well spent. Kinsler was worth his salary during his tenure as a Tiger and the Rangers got stuck holding the bag for megamillions when Prince went on permanent medical leave. * Round Thing With Stubby Arms

They want to see how things stand at the All Star break before deciding what moves need to be made. One thing I do expect is to see Whitley called up if he gets off to a good start in the minors. We are seeing some bright spots so far in ST. Yordan Alvarez is a guy we need to avoid trading.

That would be ideal. Marisnick would be a beast in San Fran park.
We save alittle with Straw and he hits for a better avg.
He is almost equal to Jake in Def. Its gonna be close on that end jake has the edge for XP.
The hole Reddick thing is ify if Tucker doesnt show up.
But Straw in CF and if you resign Springer he moves to RF you can have Tucker in LF or RF and Yordan in 1B that would be pretty cheap contracts on the lines for resigning guys like Bregman and company.
You could feont load Bregman on a ten yr contract and be rwady on resigning the younger guys qhen they are ready
