can you imagine the mess that would be if we had of sent a couple of prospects for him only to have him injured before he even takes a pitch in season. It would have been a nightmare. KC wanted pretty good prospects in exchange for Perez. that noise you heard zipping past our collective ear was the bullet we dodged.

I’m wary of having a guy on the roster because he can frame pitches. Conger was another example of a subpar player whose value was bloated by certain stats. Framing isn't the only thing though. It would be one thing if he was as bad a hitter as Raul Chavez or something, but he has proven to be a decent hitter for a catcher (thus far), and his arm is about league average. I like Stassi’s arm, but his decline in offense and playing time in the second half last season are red flags for me. As I’ve said with Realmuto, this offense can handle a catcher who isn’t the best hitter (Maldonado) so there is a mystery as to why he was handled the way he was in 2018.

Unfortunately, it's a requisite course in my MSN in Leadership/Mgmt. I certainly wouldn't take it if it weren't forced on me. It's the last non-healthcare course I have to take, and looking forward to putting it behind me. The problem with being an old guy in school is that every time you have to take some horseshit course, you say things like "What in the shit? Why do I need to take this horseshit?" a lot. I'm not considering an FNP...IF I did a NP, it'd be Neonatal. Unfortunately, most of those programs in the US have closed, making it nearly impossible to get into the ones that remain. Plus, it's too late in my life for that. I might do the Healthcare MBA, though, if I have the energy after finished this masters. If you were to ask the person who constructed the course load for your degree to explain the rationale for including this course they would be hard pressed to give you an acceptable answer. If they told you the truth they would simply say that they are not getting many people to take the course without prompting so for them to put enough butts into seats to justify the staff's costs they simply require it for non related fields of study. Your theory is borne out by the fact that the statistics and biochem/molecular bio classes are the only two courses that the school does not allow you to transfer credits in (ie. credits from taking the courses previously at another institution).

Not that it wasn't already assumed, but the rays announced Snell as their opening day starter.

I don't expect him to be anything special, but I think he can be a very affordable solid part-time catcher.

Yes, i agree that money should be spent on pitching, but, we don't know how much keeping Chirinos would cost us. Until a better option arises, I would not get rid of him. Sure, but you don't normally tend to want to give our prospects much of a chance to prove themselves. Not at the cost of losing games. I don't consider Stassi to be a prospect at the present time. He is out of options and still hasn't proven he is of major league caliber, I I think he would have been traded by now if anybody wanted him.

Even though the Astros are already in ST, I am going to be shocked if Luhnow does not make a move pitching wise, whether it be a FA signing or trade.

Pick your poisonBill's play book: run-run and stuffed both times, so 3rd and long, do a short pass...and tackled for a 3 yard gain....and punt. Bill's play book if 1st and goal within 5 yard line, QB sneak 3 times and then FG.

He is out of options and still hasn't proven he is of major league caliber, I I think he would have been traded by now if anybody wanted him. So what do you consider a player with a total of less than a year's worth of MLB playing time? Bregman hasn't been traded, does that mean nobody wants him? Stassi has value because of how cheap he is for multiple years and he has proven that he at least a solid backup catcher. Why would we trade that when we don't have anybody else proven other than a 1-year deal with Chirinos? And I think Chirinos was a fine signing, but let's be realistic about what he is. He's a one-year stop gap that has some solid to good offensive potential but is overall a pretty poor defensive catcher at this point. He was the backup plan in case we didn't get Realmuto so that we have another year to see how Stassi (and now Stubbs) progresses.

You seem to thing that being "cheap" translates into quality. We are trying to win and don't need to employ the policies of Drayton McLane by keeping players because they don't cost much. As I said, the only reason Stassi is still around is because he is out of options and no other team wants him.

I'm hoping either Gio Gonzalez or Dallas Keuchel would sign a one-year deal with a 2nd year team option, because that would be the ideal scenario for the Astros...

As I said, the only reason Stassi is still around is because he is out of options and no other team wants him. I'm not comparing them in performance. I'm just using Bregman as an example that not trading somebody doesn't mean that people don't want that player. And I didn't say cheap translates to quality, but for some positions you can fill holes with more affordable in-house options since they're not a major component of your team. I'm not saying Stassi should be hitting cleanup and starting every game. I'm saying that he can hit 8th and play 40-80 games for less than a $1 million a year rather than trying to pay somebody else $5+ million for similar production. It's like Marisnick. Marisnick has had value because of what he can bring as a roleplayer and how cost effective he has been compared to other comparable free agent players. We wouldn't dump Marisnick and then go sign a free agent 4th or 5th OFer, right? (Although that being said, Straw can likely do similar if not better overall work for even less than Marisnick now.)

Stassi may end up not being any better than a .650 OPS mediocre defensive catcher, but how many teams out there have two above-average catchers? Who signs multi-million dollar backup catchers as free agents? Nobody.

I don't really pay a lot of attention to most minor leaguers, admittedly, so I'm probably missing something with him. His numbers last year look great on paper in AAA, but when I watch him he just looks like he has a big slow swing. And his seasons before last year weren't anything amazing to me. (Good seasons, especially for his age, but nothing that really gets the juices flowing.) I hope he pans out because it would be nice to have another slugger under club control in case we lose some guys. Personally I think Fisher seems like the superior all-around athlete but he's going to have to show something soon.
