I wonder how much of Tucker's early season struggles were driven by shear disappointment on not making the club out of spring training. Probably played a role, being disappointed in his himself...but so far in May it looks like that is past him..

I’m glad we don’t have to worry about both Tucker and Whitley now.

I think he is a solid person so I hope that he keeps getting better as I would like to see him here long term. If he does start knocking the snot out of the ball like Yordan is then we will have a log jam in the outfield for next year.

I’m glad we don’t have to worry about both Tucker and Whitley now. I built a house down in Alamo Heights a few years ago for a guy who has a kid that is friends with Whitley. He called me a couple of weeks ago to get some information on his paint colors and I asked him if he had any inside scoop on Whitley's problems so far this year. Now take this with a grain of salt but it seems like good information to me that the Astros did not like the amount of break he was getting on his breaking balls so they are working on them. He is having difficulty learning to repeat the motion without telegraphing what the pitch is. So he is throwing more of those and so far the experiment is not going well. He has his head on straight about it though and knows that this is all he has left to figure out before he comes up to the show. So I quit worrying about it. If he does not get his act together pretty quick though I may start worrying again.

Whitley looking bad again tonight. 5 earned runs allowed on 5 hits (3 HRs) and 2 walks through 3 innings so far tonight. Alvarez and Tucker both 2-2 with a double so far.

Alvarez is going to force the Astros hand. He deserves the call up and his success is being sustained for long enough to slowly eliminate the fluke justification to keep him at AAA. The problem is that the outfield is crowded with MLB stars. Who would you replace? Springer? Of course not. Brantley? Nope. Reddick? Nope. So now we're looking for a way to move an outfielder into the IF or to DH. Until yesterday, Brantley looked like the best choice to move to DH, even if he doesn't like to DH because he has done well there. Both Reddick and Brantley are LH and important to keep the other team honest and adding another LH in Alvarez would almost make the lineup balanced. Reddick, of course is making wonderful defensive plays as well, so taking him out of the OF hurts defensively. Right now, the weakest links, other than catcher, are at 1B and 2B. I'm tempted to try moving Gurriel to 2B/Utility/DH until Altuve is better and try Springer or Avarez at 1B. Fortunately, the people who will make that call are very good at their jobs and have the knowledge to know how to get'r done. I would say that White is on a very short leash and this comes from someone who expected him to perform much better than he has and STILL hopes he blossoms as the season heads toward summer.
About the only thing I don't want is for Alvarez to be called up and languish on the bench.

Tucker tripled in his first at-bat tonight and then stole home. He has stolen 7 bases so far this year and hasn’t been caught stealing yet.

Beer is looking like he is ready for a promotion to AA. He went 2-3 tonight with his 9th home run of the season. He has hits in 9 of us last 10 games batting .417 (15-36) with 5 home runs in those 10 games.

Alvarez went 3-5 with 2 doubles today for Round Rock. He’s batting .403 for the season with a 1.353 OPS. Tucker went 2-4 and hit his 11th home run of the season. He is batting .362 in the month of May with a 1.284 OPS and has 6 home runs in 47 at bats.
Beer is not in the lineup for Fayetteville tonight. He is batting .417 with a 1.405 OPS and 5 home runs in 36 at-bats over his last 10 games. I’m wondering if he is headed for Corpus Christi.

olpapa I never said how much I love your avatar. I hated Will Clark That picture represents one of the greatest moments in Astros history. Last out of Scott’s no-hitter that clinched the NL West in ‘86. On consecutive days Deshaies pitched a complete game 2-hit shutout; Ryan followed that with 8 innings of 1-hit shutout ball and then Scott pitched his no-hitter to clinch the division. It was a great run.

He finished the regular season throwing 19 consecutive scoreless innings, but Lanier never used him vs the Mets.

MLB.com has a new Top 30 Astros prospects list out. Whitley, Tucker and Alvarez are still 1-3. I'm a bit surprised that Alvarez hasn’t moved past one or both of those guys based on the year he is having vs the early struggles of Tucker and especially Whitley.

That reminds of me when whats-his-face in Baltimore never used Britton in a win or go home in the postseason and it went to extra innings a few years back.
