Well I'm not sure how I missed this, but it's official now -- Davis has been sent back to AAA to make room for Gurriel. I had hoped Hinch would send Fisher down instead. Davis was just starting to catch fire and now... this. Fisher will only start to add value with his bat when he can start elevating the ball and making contact on balls in the zone. Fisher is seeing a higher percentage of strikes than any other Astro right now and he still cannot capitalize. I agree that Davis has been swinging the bat far better than Fisher. This just all revolves around needed that extra outfielder. If Fisher was sent down then Marisnick would pretty much have to start every game. Not sure though at the moment who is better in the lineup Marisnick or Fisher on a regular basis. I guess if they sent Fisher down, Gattis could play left field and Davis could be the DH. Gattis hasn't played the field in a long time though. It would have been easy enough to just install Marwin as the starting left fielder, as he was last fall, and send Fisher down, if they wanted to keep Davis with the big club. Maybe the FO is thinking that they want to keep Fisher on the big club and give him as much playing time as possible at the big league level over the next couple months, hoping he breaks out vs ML pitching. Just my opinion, but I still believe that Fisher won’t be with the Houston organization much longer. Reddick and Springer are locked up through 2020. Tucker is likely to take over the remaining OF spot around mid-June. Fisher has nothing left to prove in the minors and I just don’t see him being kept on the big club as a 4th outfielder going forward. If he catches fire in the next couple months at the big league level, he will improve his trade value. If not, his trade value won’t be any worse if he is sent down to AAA in mid-June than it would be if he is sent down now.

It's such a shame that Fisher can't get the ball in the air. He is making the hardest contact of any player on the team right now - even harder than Springer and Correa - and last year showed that when he hits fly balls, about 25% of them leave the park. That's insane. But he now leads the team in groundball % and extreme pull tendency, making it easy to shift on him. Fisher hasn't hit a single ball to the opposite field this season. Not even one. If Fisher could just become a fly ball hitter, he would have a shot at leading the team in HRs.

The problem with Derek Fisher is everyone turned their desire for his success into expectation after that first home run at Minute Maid Park. Sometimes, players are mediocre no matter how much we want them to be great. Look at Jake Marisnick. An even better example is the waste of a uniform known as Jon Singleton.

With Gurriel back healthy, I see no reason why Marwin isn’t the starting LF or at least share a platoon with Marisnick. Fisher has got pretty good speed, but it’s a moot point if he can’t get on base. Marisnick has proven that he can at least get lucky against LHP. I don’t understand the demotion of Davis over Fisher, but I guess someone had to go.

Bregman insisted that only Fisher may be on second base when he comes to bat.

He will get the majority of starts there, until either A: An injury besets an infielder (No Jinx) B: Astros sign or trade for an OF. Which I am really surprised the Astros haven't done, because their team would be so much deeper with a good LF....But then, Tucker is waiting in the wings, so might not be as a crucial, but still would like.

Is Marwin's 2018 bat really the bat you want in LF every day?

Is Marwin's 2018 bat really the bat you want in LF every day? If he was Marwin 2017, yes...but more than likely he will not be Marwin 2017....but out of the bunch to choose from, he might have the best chance in producing....until Tucker comes up, or another player is acquired... Rather have Marwin as the super utility guy.....

I think you're describing Luhnow's long term strategy. Barring injury and an immediate need, a trade deadline acquisition for another quality bat destined for FA after the season would fit quite nicely. But this gives time to see what the injury/prospect performance situation is at the time. By then, some teams will be ready to begin their tear-down on their way toward a rebuild. It certainly worked last season, even though we had to wait an extra month to get Verlander for a fair price.

I thought the untouchables were Kyle "Ted" Tucker and Forest Whitley. While not trading like it was a fire-sale is Luhnow's reputation, the other players, including Fisher, were available for the right return.

One interesting thing about the Astros batting stats (which now include over 500 plate appearances on the season) is that they look much better when adjusted for the particular parks the Astros have played in this year.
In terms of raw OPS, the Astros are at .730, ninth place in the AL but still above the league average OPS of .705.
However, when adjusted for park conditions, the Astros jump to 3rd place in the AL, with an OPS+ of 116. Above them are two other AL West teams, Oakland (120) and Anaheim (137).
This is yet another reason for optimism

This is yet another reason for optimism I'm very optimistic about the offense turning it around soon. Correa, Altuve & Springer started off hot in the first series of the year, but haven't done much since then. It looks like Springer is coming out of the funk and going the opposite way. Soon Altuve and Correa will do the same and we will be back to scoring 4+ runs a game on a regular basis. Let's just hope other players start contributing like Bregman and Marwin.

Is Marwin's 2018 bat really the bat you want in LF every day? Depending on Tucker's service clock there aren't better options in Fisher and Marisnick as illustrated by the comments on this thread

That was the player people were going bonkers on not trading during the dead line last season. I wouldn't say I was going bonkers over not trading Fisher last summer. Just that I wasn't sure if I wanted to trade him for Justin Wilson. That aspect of it's been validated When I was defending the front office during Fisher's first 50 MLB ABs I figured they knew something the rest of us didn't yet

(I'm not saying you are bear) They need to either let him play every day at AAA or with the big club. He is fast and a good fielder. Something tells me he could probably hit a little better than Jake if penciled in the lineup every day.

What disappoints me most about Fisher is he looks like a ballplayer when he's out on the diamond with his eye-of-the-tiger look. Then he fails like Rudy Ruettiger

One weakness I see on the team is that with Marwin as the regular LFer we don’t really have anyone on the bench who we can trust to pinch hit when the situation calls for it and deliver a hit with any consistency. I know that with the DH in the AL having dependable bats on the bench is not as crucial as it is in the NL, but I still think it is important to have at least one. Fisher and Marisnick are near automatic Ks and Stassi, while batting .350 in the early going, is nonetheless striking out in 40% of his at-bats. I know Marwin has been struggling, but over the course of the season I think he will prove to be a better clutch hitter than any of those three.

Marwin has successfully avoided strikeouts over his past several games so maybe he won't K too much this year. In terns of having a pinch hitter who hits for a high average and gets you that late-inning base hit when you need to score a man from 2B or 3B, Tony Kemp might be the best internal option (<10% strikeout rate, hit .329 at AAA last season) who's not already on the active roster. But since Kemp has not been able to really get it together at the major league level, the Astros might have to look for a PH type player in trade. Adrian Beltre was discussed as one option yesterday. Beltre's .312 batting avg last year was 17th among players with 150 or more PAs. Marwin ranks #32 on that list so maybe he is the man to go with, given that he's already an Astro.

It's debatable whether the front office should've brought another bat on board in the offseason and I've argued it myself, but this is honestly the first season in 40 years I've rooted for this club where I've felt the owner and GM have done their jobs, but the position players aren't doing theirs Last year we fouled-off pitches on 0-2 counts until we found the pitch we could drive, and everyone up-and-down the lineup was doing it. It made the 2017 club fun to watch scoring all those runs, especially with how frequently they did it with 2 outs Now we're falling behind in the count and assuming the next pitch is the one to drive, even if it's in the dirt. It's like we've fallen back into old habits from 2016 and I'm starting to wonder how much of this is Beltrán not there with his skull sessions on plate approach

I agree. We have a perfect storm of competence in this organization. Which was the opposite about 10 years ago or so.

Outside of Correa, nobody on this team has hit consistently. No reason to be running anybody off yet. We’re about to be 11-4.
