If the Astros got himfor cheap, then yes, but I don't think he will be a big contributor this year, he might be a burden....but give Strom, the pitcher whisper, a long off-season with Chris, then I would see him being a major factor for the team. I think thats kinda what they are saying. Trade Archer but to make it worth while to the Astros you might have to add in Vazquez. With the way Osuna has been going and out bullpen it would be worth the risk on Archer if we could add Vazquez. Archer gets that wierd spot in the Bullpen Long Relief Pitcher and spot duty so Strom can work with him. Pretty sure you could add a Devenski in the deal to open atleast one roster spot. But Vazquez beside Pressley and Osuna would be a very good 8 and 9th innings

Jason Marbach (writer of your article) is a fecking idiot. Plus, he swore that he would no longer follow the Astros when they signed Osuna...he even gave up ownership of his Astros Facebook group. Oh yeah, he’s a smug know-it-all.

Do you know how expensive Vazquez makes the deal? They would demand an untouchable.. Would they with Archers crappy contract? If you remember the article, Archer's contract is not crappy.....and they wouldn't have to package Vazquez, they could just trade by himself and ask a king's ransomm for him... Archer, with his high ceiling, will still probably fetch a teams's top 10 and 20 prospect. Vazquez, with his great production and team control, will get an untouchable and two more top ten....His asking price could be in the realm of what Cleveland would ask for Hand. I really hate when a team has to trade away top prospects for a Reliever. Relievers should be grown from within or signed. If traded for, they should not be headliner in the trade, if they are, then you have failed cultivating from within.

The point this guy makes about the 2-seamer is still valid. Like m420 mentioned Strom told Gerrit to stop throwing sinkers after he left Pittsburgh, and he's been better as a result. Whether no one wants Archer or not, he does fit the profile of a starter that the front office considers targeting. Especially since the Pirates can't demand blue chips for someone currently stinking up the joint

I think he'd be a decent pickup for past this season, but I don't believe they can fix him quick enough to be the boost we need for the postseason.

We're going to need help in the bullpen later on. Whether that's Peacock, or McHugh when he comes back, or a FA it doesn't matter, but Pressly, Harris, and Osuna will get burned out with as much as we are using them.

Drew Smyly
This might be an interesting story to watch as it unfolds. DFA's by the Rangers, so they'll be on the hook for the remainder of his $7 million salary this year. Unless someone claims him on the waiver wire. (Not gonna happen).
He'll have the right to refuse assignment to the minors. He could sign on with any other team and the Rangers will still be paying the freight. Could be a great low-risk reclamation project. Sign him to a minors contract (won't even need to be on the 40) and if he gets himself right, promote him to the bigs. Cost to the team would be pro-rated minimum wage (if he does get promoted) with the Rangers paying the balance.
Of course he could sign with anyone. But maybe he would consider the Astros as being a good bet for earning a ring if he gets back on track. idk.

He sucked in 2016, didn't play in 2017 or 2018, and then has sucked even harder in 2019. His K rate is solid, but those walk and HR rates are horrible.

I'm normally big on ultra low risk players, but I'm not sure he would even upgrade our minor league pitching staffs that much while trying to find out if he can bounce back. He's certainly worth a move by somebody, but I don't think he's useful for us. Now if he was a catcher.....

On most teams, Stassi is unrosterable. However, he has the luxury of being on a team that is bursting at the seams with talent and that management can afford to hope that he comes through.

For the most part, he was last postseason. If he starts throwing 100+ consistently again, I'll reassess. On that we agree. I feel like there’s more to it than what the team says. All they’ve said so far is that his injured quadriceps kept him from being a starter. In that loss to the Brewers, he was testing his shoulder in the dugout after his inning was up. I don’t think we’ve seen him since.

If a player is over-performing his contract, he has positive trade value. It doesn't matter whether he's the best pitcher in baseball or not if his contract is commensurate with his performance. He has a net value of zero. If a player is under-performing his contract, he has negative value.
There may be differences of opinion on whether your staff can change the calculus, but any good GM will not be caught paying a premium in players for a player who is being paid what he's worth. Fans expect their GM to double pay by taking on the contract and giving away value in younger players. It has happened in the past (Steinbrenner), but those wackos are becoming scare.

It doesn't matter whether he's the best pitcher in baseball or not if his contract is commensurate with his performance. He has a net value of zero. This is winter-trade thinking. You can definitely throw that right out the window at the deadline for rental players. Any GM in his right mind will pay more than 'zero' in terms of prospects for the best pitcher available at the deadline even if his salary is 'commensurate with his performance'. On a true rental, a half year of 'commensurate' salary is a bargain if it puts the team over the top, down the stretch and into the postseason. Also worth noting: For players with high salaries, the selling team will often kick in all or part of the remaining salary for a better return in prospects.

I think the next trade for a starter Luhnow makes if that will be closer to Fiers than Verlander. Jeff's not successful everytime he plays moneyball on starting pitching, but he loves to roll the dice on those type of acquisitions

Not at all. Stassi has been horrible at the plate this year. But that doesn't change the fact that he grades out very well as a receiver. I haven't looked this year, but last year every one of our starters was statistically considerably better when he caught than when Maldonado did (2.88 ERA to 3.49 for JV). Framing and receiving skills matter. It doesn't show up in his personal numbers, but it makes a difference for the team. And on a team where we do have plenty of offense (normally), it's valuable to have a catcher that helps make our pitchers even better. Especially a catcher making practically the league minimum. Now obviously he needs to do better to warrant more playing time, but, given his low cost, he does have value to the team for now. I'm totally open to getting somebody better, but I don't think that's our biggest need right now. Do you?

Kaplan has a pretty good idea on the Rotation and Pen.
Believes that the Astros can Go get 2 SPs and Shift Peacock and Valdez back to the Pen for good.
Views Valdez and James as Stop gap guys in the rotation.
