This. He's always done what he does. Either you ignore him, or you're a good little fish and you take the bait every time. Then you get all worked up over absolutely nothing, but you still come home with gold from the special olympics.

Need to take a moment to recognize Luhnow. He pulled this off without losing Whitely or Tucker. He's the Man!!!! Heat, you were right. I should have had more faith and confidence that he knew what he was doing........He outsmarted every GM in baseball today.

I'm very surprised. Cole is gone for sure, but I think that was a foregone conclusion. Will be interesting to see how Luhnow manipulates the cap to extend the window. I'm not sure that Coles gone for sure. Probably, but not for sure with Luhnow manipulating the payroll and Greinkes deferred money.

I'm not sure that Coles gone for sure. Probably, but not for sure with Luhnow manipulating the payroll and Greinkes deferred money. They were sitting at 171 million next year before adding Greinke. With the the deferred $ he just bumped them close to $190 million, if not over. Plus he has to either re-sign or replace about 6 upcoming FA's, including Chirenos. His trades have replaced McHugh and Miley and possibly Chirenos if he wants to roll with Maldonado/Stubbs next year. Unless he cuts some bigger contracts (Yuli, Reddick), he'll be over the cap. I don't think he's going to be able to manipulate another 28-30 mil for Cole, and even if he did, how does he plan to pay Correa/Springer? Be interesting to see.

Yep, this team would have been a challenge for payroll even without the deadline trades. I think the projection on BBref does estimate the bump the arb guys are likely to get but I dunno how accurate that is for guys like Correa and Springer. Especially if they want to extend them. Luhnow may have been given the go-ahead to exceed the threshold. But we won't know that until we see what happens this winter.

Does the top "limit" increase any from year to year?

My suspicion is that we can only sign two of Correa/Springer/Cole at most. Only Cole has to be done this off season. Greinke is the Cole Backup plan. Sanchez is the Miley backup plan and Nova/Tucker is the Correa/Springer backup plan after moving the pieces. The bullpen additions are for Harris/Rondon/McHugh and Smith.

But all he does really is take real tweets and manipulate them a little. There was a tweet sitting there for two hours saying the Giants wanted Tucker for Bumgarner that folks could've looked up instead of taking the forum insider's word for it

How many butts can you put in the seats, how many dogs and beer can you sell, and most importantly, how big of a deal can you make for TV rights whenever that contract comes up. It's all about the Benjamins. The tax isn't all that bad at first. It's only assessed on the amount over the threshold, not on the entire payroll. But it's regressive. The rate increases each year for repeat offenders.

Does the top "limit" increase any from year to year? Minimally. I think it goes from $204 this year to $206 next year. The new CBA is coming soon so no real long-term plans can be laid.

With the talent we have on our roster, where they are on their contracts and the team's place in the standings, I wonder if analytics would calculate it's optimal for us to exceed the luxury taxIn other sports the team's stars recut their deals so that the money can work. We have 22 million dollars of cash under the cap for the balance of this year according to Sportrac. Also from what I read about the Greinke contract is that 33% of his salary for 19-21 was in the form of deferred money. So if both of those things are true then we can sign Springer to an extension with a nice signing bonus paid this year, his 20 salary is already fixed at 12million, and so for 2021 he would have to take one for the team and use his signing bonus to buy his toys. Same goes for Cole, big up front bonus, smaller salary for 20 and 21 and then boom. Correa becomes a free agent after 21 so we deal with that then. That is unless we unload Reddick the we got a couple of bucks to play with. The chance for everyone to agree with all of that and all the information that I read about Grienke's salary structure being true are slim but hey there is still a chance.

Sanchez is the Miley backup plan and Nova/Tucker is the Correa/Springer backup plan after moving the pieces. The bullpen additions are for Harris/Rondon/McHugh and Smith. I just don't see Cole being signed. He'll want a long-term deal and lots of dough. Correa or Springer might cut a deal with a moderately long term at a reasonable (but not dirt cheap) rate for the security. But if it doesn't happen by this winter for Springer, it won't happen.
The way to keep a team competitive in the long term and still affordable is to have a steady stream of players coming up from the farm. That's where your bread is buttered.
The CBT threshold is $208 million for 2020 but each team has to pay about $20 million into player benefits. So already we're down to $188 million. Plus they have to add in past obligations like Jon Singleton (chickenfeed in this case, not even worth mentioning). And all the minors players who are getting a major-league bonus just for being on the 40 need to be factored in.
Let's make a rough estimate of $175 million starting out the year (so there's at least a tiny bit of room to add at the deadline). That puts your average allowance at $7 million per player, on the 25-man roster.
For every Verlander ($33 million next year) you need FOUR players making minimum wage (total of $2 million for all four) to free up the extra $26 million that he's over the average.
Yes, there will also be some savings compared to the $7 million average for players in their early arb years. But they don't give you the full $6.5 million difference. And some of the later years arb guys will be well over the $7 million average mark, so those guys are eating up some of the 'savings'.

Try to re-sign Cole....Extend Springer next season....2021 trade Correa if we have someone that is at least around 75 to 80% of Correa's offensive per game production, but at the same time, one we count on to play the whole year. Allow Reddick to walk after 2020 and if Gurriel can't re-sign at good price for the Astros, he will have to walk as well....Counter the expensive contract of Verlander, Greinke, Altuve and Bregman + expected salaries of Springer and Cole along with the low costs of Tucker, Alvarez, Straw and Stubbs....And for heaven's sake cultivate some of the pitching prospects into impact relievers....save money there...

Captain Obvious would even appear cheesier, based on this understatement. Great shot with him sitting in front of a HOF sign......... Jeff. Based on your tenure here, you are bound to finish there.

If he had signed Morton for less than Grienke is getting, none of this stunning trade talk would have happened. I applaud Luhnow but Morton was cheaper and helped win a WS.
