59-37 .615 winning percentage (On pace for 100 Wins) 1st in the AL West (4.5 games) 3rd in the AL (2.5 games back) 4th in MLB (3.5 games back) 6th in Run Differential (+86) Team ERA+: 113 Team OPS+: 116
Cole vs. Pena
Time to right the ship. As frustrated as everybody is, we're still on pace to be a 100-win team for the 3rd straight year, and we're still the 3rd best team in the AL even while not playing up to our potential.
I'd like to give kudos to Jake for handling his plunking the right way yesterday. He knew it was coming and understood why, and he didn't let it bother him. I feel bad for the guy because I think most people know that he's seemingly a good guy and doesn't deserve to be treated like a villain. That being said, I also want to praise the team for having his back. All of it was necessary and none of it needed to result in further injuries. I don't think they needed to go as high up towards Jake head as they did, but it should be done with now. If not, this is how good rivalries get started. And it would be nice to see us develop a good rivalry again. We DO NOT need our main guys plunking their's though. They have nothing to lose if their team has players suspended....we do.
Also, great work by the bullpen and Armenteros last night after Rondon blew up. James is really looking much better. Outside of that Colorado explosion he has only given up one run since June 20th.

Has Rondon ever been good? Did we really spend a little time a year or two ago thinking he could be our closer?

If Jake had been a jerk and taunted Lucroy, I could understand the Angels getting upset. Jake has been nothing but class since the incident which is more than I can say for the Angels and their fans. When Jake got plunked, some of their fans stood up and cheered. That doesn't sit well with me.
I do agree that I hope this is over. You're right in that we have more to lose than them. Hoping Cole comes through and keeps them off the base paths.

Has Rondon ever been good? Did we really spend a little time a year or two ago thinking he could be our closer? Rondon seems to do well until the season progresses. I think he gets worn out. It was the first time he was used in this way. I'm not surprised at all that he struggled.

Pitching in a different inning than you're used to leads to a little struggle...The baseball tragedy we saw in the 1st inning last night was not "struggling", it was pure-dee sucking ass. Which homes does often, regardless of the inning.

When Goodwin basically slid towards center field while Bregman was throwing to first base, the umpires not the pansy Angels players did nothing. I thought they were the fairness police.

The last time I defended Harris he had a bad day, so I'm not going to do it again. I'll just say that the hate Harris gets is completely unwarranted 99% of the time.

Jake should have never been suspended.....if he were Mike Trout, nothing would have been done. With that said, I would like to see Cole nail Pujiols in the ribswith a 100 mph fastball.

Devo has been up and down all year for sure, but Rondon was sitting at 2.90 before the all-star break and Harris has mostly been great all year long (all Astros career long). Again, the bullpen is completely out of sorts trying to cover for the starters. I wouldn't mind adding another shutdown reliever for the postseason, but if we can get the starting pitching settled down the bullpen will bounce back.

Maybe use him as an opener that goes 2-3 and see how he does.

Maybe use him as an opener that goes 2-3 and see how he does. Pulling James after one inning on Monday was a big mistake. He could probably have given us three innings. Valdez had been horrible in his start against the Rangers and was worse this time. Glad he was sent down.

He's certainly much better in the first half than he is the second half (most pitchers are), but his worst month historically is July (4.93) by a wide margin. He's normally quite better in August (3.30) and September (3.34). Again, he just isn't as bad as people make him out to be. I think people blow his 2015 postseason out of proportion. Kind of like fans do with Brad Lidge and his Pujols HR. Lidge was an elite closer way more often than he was a bad one. (Including a 2.18 ERA in the postseason.)

No one uses ERA when rating relievers, and you know it. Along with that 2.90, Rondon has a large handful of games where he shat the bed and blew the lead.

ERA is fine for relievers once they've put in a decent amount of appearances. It's not the end all, but its fine for general discussion purposes.

2.90 is definitely not indicative of how well/poorly Rondon has pitched.

I'd have to go pull up some other stuff. It at least means he hasn't been bad. He may not have been good, but at least not bad.
In high leverage situations he has a .200 BAA and a .250 OBP Against. So that's not bad. Not amazing, but not bad.
Edit: Those are actually better than Osuna. Although Osuna does it more often.

I’m going to try and hang in there again and watch at least until the 5-6 inning range. Hopefully the 3rd times a charm and we get a W.
