Lots of these guys understand perfectly but use it as a crutch in an attempt to get sympathy or get away with something. I have heard some pretend not to understand English and later overhear them speaking it fluently. One of the first Jobs I had when I got back from Nam was selling Wedding Albums in the Miami area. I got put mostly in the Cuban neighborhood and most of the Women who answered the door would go No Habla English. I quickly learned a trick to get them. After the said the No Habal I would say I see a Spider on you Upper Left Arm 7 out of 10 would half scream and start shaking and wiping the Left Arm. I would then say Not Really. I quit that Job pretty quickly. Thank you for your service to this Nation during Vietnam. If it weren't for people like you we would be lost. Tip of the cap sir.... |

Have you ever noticed that those who shouted loudest and longest about being a baby killer are the same ones who demand the right to kill babies in the womb or even afterwards. They really don't care about anything or anyone except themselves.
I am grateful for those who served us by putting their lives at risk for us. Not so much for REMFs.

Minimum 200 plate appearances in the AL for rookies
Yordan
Batting average: .329 (2nd)
Runs: 40 (8th)
Doubles: 19 (3rd)
HRs: 21 (2nd)
RBIs: 62 (1st)
Walks: 35 (4th)
OB%: .420 (1st)
Vlad Jr
Batting average: .280 (4th)
Runs: 47 (3rd)
Doubles: 23 (1st)
HRs: 15 (5th)
RBIs: 58 (2nd)
Walks: 40 (2nd)
OB%: .353 (3rd)
Add up the placement of those 7 categories and Alvarez has 21 to Guerrero's 20 (only 1 point better despite having 152 more ABs)
Since the All-Star break
Alvarez: .312 avg, 25 runs, 11 doubles, 12 HRs, 33 RBIs, 26 BBs, .418 OB% 141 ABs
Vlad Jr: .324 avg, 18 runs, 10 doubles, 7 HRs, 32 RBIs, 14 BBs, .389 OB% 142 ABs
Alvarez beats out Vlad in every category but avg (virtually same about of ABs)
Lastly, look at with runners on base:
Alvarez: .362 Avg, 8 HRs, 47 RBIs, 19 BBs, .445 OB%
Vlad Jr: .298 Avg, 9 HRs, 51 RBIs, 16 BBs, .360 OB%
Pretty even #s (outside of the batting and OB%) despite Vlad having 55 more ABs.
Hands down RIGHT NOW if the season ended Alvarez takes the ROY. And we still have 30 more games to go.

Common sense would dictate that, but since when does the Baseball Writers consistently show that? Hype, name recognition, and AL East exposure give Vlad an edge. Alavarez has to more tha soundly beat Vlad statistcally to seal the deal. Sadly, as I said in another post, at this very moment, I rate this race 60/40 for Yordan. Players with inferior stats have won many times before in the Cy, MVP, and ROY. This may be no exception |

With all the hype that Vlad Jr. has gotten, and then he got to impress people with the HR derby, I think it will end up a closer vote than we think, sadly. Not to mention that Brandon Lowe and that Orioles pitcher will likely steal some votes. It's not cut and dry. Yordan has to maintain.

He's on pace for 18 HR 70 RBI and a .822 OPS. Most years that will win a ROY. Heck, it's remarkably similar to Bagwell's 15 HR 82 RBI .824 OPS ROY season. It's just not as impressive as what Yordan is doing. |
