Thank the Lord. The free agents for first base were as bad as for centerfielders.

Fair pice with an out. Don't get sloppy and extend Springer and Reddick. And it should be an OK offseason beginning. The playoffs are a wash. No reason to be excited

Source: Yuli Gurriel's 2021 extension is worth $6.5 million guaranteed, plus performance bonuses. The 2022 club option is worth $8 million.

No reason to be excited I expected you to show up with more BS. Don't pretend you are glad we signed him because you have wanted him gone for two years. Click would be a damn fool not to do all he can to extend Springer......let Reddick go. We saved money on what Yuli took so use it to offer George enough to keep him. Go after Brantley, too. You keep showing your ignorance by wanting them to let Springer walk......Straw sure as hell can't replace him.

Sayed along time ago I am afraid of his age. They do not need to get cought up in a Pujols contract or worse Chris Davis. Original thought was he would get above 10m and around 3 to 4 yrs. Thank god he didn't get that. The Astros gave them selves an out after this year on a two year deal. Springer needs to go. I think we can find a trade for a young CF. And don't sleep on Chas

He has several good years left and they need to be in an Astros uniform. If they don't do all they can to keep him, they will regret it. He shouldn't get a ridiculous deal like the Angels gave Pujols, but, they should go at least $30 million per year for 5 years. Myles Straw sure as hell can't replace him. The deal Yuli signed was a bargain so we have money to get George to stay........we are fools if we don't.

You have to ask yourself, for the money we'd need to spend on Springer, how many other holes could we address? Could you get Brantley re-signed, and add a couple solid-good veteran pitchers? Could you get a frontline catcher and a good-but-not-elite OFer?
As much as we all like Springer, is filling one OF spot more valuable than filling multiple spots?

One thing on Springer’s side is it’s going to take a lot of shrewd moves to amass a good farm system again. To keep the wave of momentum going, they’re going to need to keep guys like Springer, especially after Altuve’s lost season.

All of those are good points, but, what is available to replace Springer? Tucker is the only regular outfielder we have under contract. Straw has not shown he can hit enough to be a regular. Unless we can sign Brantley, we have to make every effort to keep Springer. I haven't seen a list of free agents. I do know we don't have prospects to trade for what we need so signing free agents has to be a top priority.

Could a Brandon Bielak and Lance McCullers land you Drew Waters and Terone Harris?
You do something like this and try and sign a Chaffin or Ray or a combination of players and go forward. Javier Valdez Greinke and Urquidy should be fine. With Verlander down and possibly out just add another Sp in FA and be done.

You also forgot to mention Javier in the rotation. If we followed your line of thinking, instead of trying to win championships we'd be constantly trading veterans to avoid paying them and being in a rebuilding mode. You don't dump players like Springer when you have no replacement. You always mention somebody's prospects as replacements for proven, productive players....A prospect is a guy who MIGHT make a quality major leaguer.......Springer and Gurriel have already proven their worth.

Springer does as much or more to help us than Altuve or Bregman who are both being well-paid. Springer deserves as much as those two.

Springer does as much or more to help us than Altuve or Bregman who are both being well-paid. Springer deserves as much as those two. I'm not arguing that he doesn't deserve similar annual salary to those guys (albeit with a shorter contract due to age and health). He's certainly a $25-30 million a year player for 4-6 years. The problem is that we already have so much money committed to other players, that it would be hard to offer him what he's worth while still trying to fill all the other holes we'll have with reasonable talent. So that's the question. $30 million a year likely gets you Brantley and probably two good relievers or a good starting pitcher....or it gets you Springer. I imagine he'll be looking at similar offers like what Goldschmidt got (5-years $130 million +incentives) or more. The only possible way I see something different happening is if he were willing to take a backloaded contract so that we have more money available these next couple seasons. We can argue all day that Altuve and Bregman didn't earn their salaries this year, but, when they signed their contracts, they were easily worth what they got. Springer had opportunities for extensions as well...but he has always wanted to pursue free agency. Which he has every right to do so.

At the time they signed those contracts, I thought they deserved them. We didn't know the cheating was going on at the time, either. I wish George had signed an extension, but, that doesn't mean we should not try to get a deal done with him now. Saint makes a valid point about choosing between Brantley and a couple of relievers and Springer. We probably got Yuli to sign for about half of what he may have gotten elsewhere so we have that money. Reddick's salary will be off the books so that helps. We need to go after both Springer and Brantley and then be concerned with the pen. We don't know the situation with Osuna as far as I know. If he doesn't come back next season healthy, we need a closer.......Pressly is not a closer. I still contend McCullers is suited to be the closer.

With ZG, Framber, Urquidy, McCullers, and Javier we have a pretty solid (not amazing) rotation. With ZG's age and McCuller's health a concern I really feel like we need a veteran that can add some solid depth. So really next year we're looking at needing a minimum of (in my opinion): 1 - Starting Pitcher 2 - Relief Pitchers 2 - Outfielders 1 - Backup Catcher And that's with assuming we're okay continuing with Toro, Taylor, and Mayfield as infield replacements... I supposed you could look at making Diaz the everyday LFer, but his health is a concern too. Edit: And I disagree that Yuli could have gotten a lot more than $7 million after his miserable year and age, on top of the bad reputation with the sign-stealing. I think he took a reasonable safe deal hoping to rebuild some more FA value.
